Subject: School Unification Forum: 6:30 p.m. on TuesdaySCHOOL UNIFICATION FORUM:
Make your plans now to attend the first Vote YES public forum on school unification, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at the Rainwater Conference Center.
Our guest speaker will be Dr. Terry Jenkins, who served as the Superintendent of Troup County Schools during the unification process of LaGrange and Troup County school systems in 1992.
Many of the same issues and rumors being discussed locally were also debated when LaGrange and Troup County were voting to unify their school systems. In his presentation, Dr. Jenkins will discuss how the school unification issue unfolded in Troup County, its impact to improving test scores and graduation rates, and how the decision to unify their school systems has transformed the community for the better.

Videos of last night’s Valdosta school forum by George Rhynes
the Valdosta Board of Education (VBOE) approved
along with its
statement opposing school consolidation.
George Rhynes reports there were 300 people there,
and he videoed everybody who stood up and spoke.
I especially like this one, with Jerome Tucker asking:
That pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it?What makes the Chamber of Commerce better qualified than professional educators?
Here’s the video:

Solar Lowndes County Commission?
local governments and businesses don’t have to wait
on the state.
For example, the
Lowndes County Commission has opened a discussion about solar energy
in response to a presentation by Bill Branham.
Now that they’ve learned
-
that
solar is cost-effective in the same way buying a car is,
-
that
there are two fast-growing solar manufacturers in Georgia
(
Suniva of Norcross
and
MAGE SOLAR of Dublin),
with associated potential jobs right here in south Georgia,
and
-
about
the extraordinary negative side of coal mining,
If the LCC won’t do it, how about solar Valdosta fire departments, or solar Hahira tobacco barns?

T-SPLOST public meeting in Valdosta Monday morning 19 September 2011
Monday, September 19, 2011; 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; at the Valdosta City Hall Annex; 300 North Lee Street, Valdosta, Georgia; presentation will begin at 10:30 a.m.These meetings are intended to gather public input:
After the public meetings the Roundtable will reconvene to review the public comments and adopt a final Constrained List that will be presented on the ballot to voters in 2012.If you can’t go to the meeting, you can send in the public comment form or email Corey Hull at the SGRC.
I don’t know what you might want to comment on,
but a couple of things that come to my mind are:
- Why the 50% or $4 million increase for Old US 41 N widening?
- Why is widening old US 41 North in there at all when the less expensive bus system is not?

Very interesting school consolidation chart
I have not confirmed the data in the chart, but I’m guessing if there’s anything wrong with it, CUEE surely can tell us.

What about VSU President selection? —Bobbi Anne Hancock to Nathan Deal @ VSU 16 September 2011
VSU student Bobbi Anne Hancock asked Gov. Nathan Deal what was going on
with the selection process for a new president for Valdosta State University.
He went on at some length but I can’t quite make out whether he answered the
question.

The extraordinary negative side of coal mining —Jane Osborn @ LCC 13 September 2011
Jane Osborn talked about two health issues:
the downside of coal mining,
and no institutions for mental health.
…also related to the solar discussion that was begun yesterday, I think a piece we don’t talk about very often is the extraordinary negative side of coal mining. We are taking the tops off of mountains in Appalachia, leaving pristine streams clogged with the debris and the toxic waste of that. So coal is not just the price you see that we pay for it. Coal is seen in the price of people still dying of black lung, every time a mine collapses, and every time another mountain is taken down. I would guess if they were taking mountains down in North Georgia, we’d be fussing about it.She said she has been a social worker for 33 years. She said starting June the DBHDD there would be a new service she recommended the county advertise on its website.
As of June 1st no person in the state of Georgia with a developmental disability may be placed in an institution. The new service is a 24/7 toll free number to call for help.

Solar is cost-effective —Dr. Noll @ LCC 13 September 2011
Dr. Noll made the case for the cost-effectiveness of solar energy
through, among other things, an analogy to finaninc buying a car.
First Dr. Noll thanked people who had supported WACE’s anti-biomass work, and hoped people had had time to read his recent LTE in the VDT, Waste Not, Want Not. Then he addressed Commissioner Raines’ comments of the previous day. Dr. Noll pointed out that solar is fast becoming less expensive and with financing costs little more than a car or truck.
