SO I called Ashley Tye, who said:
  • This is the second and last public hearing on updates to the county’s emergency plan, which are required very five years.
  • There is no complete draft yet.
  • There is a set of powerpoint slides with the main points, and they will be presented tonight.
  • Any changes necessary from public input will be incorporated.
  • A final draft will be compiled.
  • The County Commission will have to adopt a resolution to adopt the plan. There will be no public hearing at the Commission meeting.
  • Finally, the county will send the plan to GEMA, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency.

Emergency management sends out those emergency management telephone calls you can sign up for, including weather information you could also get on county-supplied NOAA Weather Radios when your telephone isn’t working, except the Commission declined to accept the federal grant that would have paid for them. Maybe Richard Raines and I can afford $21 for a radio, but a lot of people can’t.

So it could be prudent to find out what’s being discussed at this hearing. Here’s the online description of that agency:

The Lowndes County Emergency Management Agency’s primary mission is to lead the planning and preparedness efforts within Lowndes County. This requires working with the numerous local response agencies, governments, and volunteer resource agencies to develop effective all hazards plans to ensure that Lowndes County and its citizens are adequately prepared for any type of disaster that may affect our local communities.
See you there.
