Stanford beats Harvard; divests from coal



In the first big win for

the fossil fuel divestment campaign,
Stanford just did what campaign-founder Harvard has not yet:
announced it would divest from coal-mining companies.

Acting on a recommendation of Stanford’s Advisory Panel on Investment
Responsibility and Licensing, the Board of Trustees announced that
Stanford will not make direct investments in coal mining companies. The
move reflects the availability of alternate energy sources with lower
greenhouse gas emissions than coal.

Southern Company downgraded to sell over Kemper coal and Vogtle nuclear



Time to break out of the utility death spiral by breaking
away from cost overruns at Kemper “clean” Coal
and the Plant Vogtle nuclear boondoggle
and getting on with real renewable solar and wind power.

UBS wrote 5 May 2014,

Southern Company: Kemper Tantrums; Reducing to Sell,

Reducing to Sell on continued delays for the Kemper IGCC project

With further delays and increased costs for the Kemper IGCC project
resulting in yet another $380M of writedowns (further slippage
costing $25M/month) and now the likely loss of $120M-$150M of bonus
depreciation as well, we view the current premium P/E multiple as
untenable.

VSU up there with Harvard about fossil fuel divestment



VSU is with the big schools, leading the stigmatization of fossil fuel
companies and the exodus from those stranded assets.
Students are leading on that and related issues,
more than our local elected bodies, but there’s an election going on.

FPL already dirtying Georgia air at Plant Scherer: and a pipeline, too?



Georgia Power’s Plant Scherer is #1 among the U.S. dirtiest power plants.
But FPL owns most of one of the four units there,
dirtying Georgia’s air for Florida’s power.
The same FPL that wants the fracked methane Sabal Trail pipeline
through Georgia, destroying Georgia’s environment.
It’s time for Georgia to say no to destroying Georgia’s environment
for a company in another state.

VDT has selective smell



To the VDT the county government always smells like azaleas
and the city of Valdosta government always smells like sewage.
The local newspaper of record doesn’t seem to smell sewage
or landfill problems from Lowndes County.
Today’s VDT editorial complains about
environmental groups paying attention to “theoretical disasters”
(presumably referring to the Sabal Trail pipeline),
yet the VDT has never covered the group that has
most consistently followed the watershed-wide
flooding issues that cause Valdosta’s flooding problems:
WWALS Watershed Coalition.
The VDT recommends citizens get more involved
in sniffing out Valdosta’s sewage problems, yet it doesn’t seem
to cover Citizens Wishing To Be Heard anymore, nor has the VDT called
for the citizen participation sessions promised by
the local governments for the Army Corps of Engineers flooding studies.
Maybe the VDT could encourage citizen participation, rather than ignore it.

VSU new special committee on sustainability to investigate fossil fuel divestment

Whom do you serve? A question for local government

A question asked about big oil and Mobile is just as relevant
to every local and state government along the proposed Sabal Trail
fracked methane pipeline,
and Transco and Florida Southeast Connection, too.
A couple of local elected officials and several candidates did make
public statements Saturday (stay tuned), so maybe we’re starting to
get some answers to this question in Lowndes County, Georgia.
Some other locations have already been getting answers.

How to invite toxic industries to your county



Maybe we should stop inviting toxic industries to Lowndes County.
We’ve been doing that with coal ash, PCBs, superfund wastewater,
used diapers in recycling, and suing local businesses while not terminating
an exclusive franchise with a company that is involved in all of that.
Not to mention Sterling Chemical.



Here in Lowndes County we have

TVA coal ash and Florida coal ash
in our landfill,
and the landfill operator spreads the coal ash on roads on the site,
which is just uphill from the Withlacoochee River.

GA EPD
fined that landfill operator $27,500 in January 2013

for accepting PCBs into that same Pecan Row Landfill.
The same landfill that accepted

196,500 gallons of wastewater from the
Seven Out Superfund site in Waycross, GA.

Time to call it: Carbon Crash, Solar Dawn

Another observer gets it that

green solar power is winning.
Letting a fracking deliver company turn us into “stakeholders” in a white
elephant methane pipeline would be an even huger waste after the
pipeline stopped being used in a decade or so because

sun, wind, and water power everything by then,
winning like the Internet did.

I think it’s time to call it. Renewables and associated storage,
transport and digital technologies are so rapidly disrupting whole
industries’ business models they are pushing the fossil fuel
industry towards inevitable collapse.

Some of you will struggle with that statement. Most people accept
the idea that fossil fuels are all powerful — that the
industry controls governments and it will take many decades to force
them out of our economy. Fortunately, the fossil fuel industry
suffers the same delusion.

In fact, probably the main benefit of the US shale gas and oil
“revolution” is that it’s keeping the fossil fuel
industry and it’s cheer squad distracted while renewables, electric
cars and associated technologies build the momentum needed to make
their takeover unstoppable — even by the most powerful
industry in the world.
