The sun came up on a different world —Julian Assange

Julian Assange of Wikileaks spoke from the Ecuadorean Embassy in London today (video, text):

The next time somebody tells you that it is pointless to defend the rights we hold dear, remind them of your vigil in the dark outside the Embassy of Ecuador, and how, in the morning, the sun came up on a different world, and a courageous Latin American nation took a stand for justice.

The British government made a stunning mistake in throwing away the worldwide goodwill just gained through the London Olympic Games, by actually beginning to storm a sovereign embassy in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations that was observed throughout the Cold War. How could they be so foolish? This man, this reporter and publisher, they think is somehow more dangerous to them than the armed might of the Soviet Union was? This is as if JFK arrested MLK after John Glenn’s first orbital flight (a step which JFK fortunately did not take).

There is something you can do, even when the world is turned upside down:

Another home with wind power

When we arrived, the wind company was tuning the stay wires on the windmill at the home of Karl and Clare Kuntz in western New York State.

Clare said the wind company is Sustainable Energy Developments. She added,

Sign You can put your money in the mattress or in the bank, and get about the same appreciation. Or you can put it in wind or solar and feel good about it.

Karl said it would take about fifteen years to pay back the wind investment, and meanwhile they get more power than they use, and still will after it’s all paid for. He remarked that the wind company has also started doing solar energy, because solar now costs half as much as wind. And that’s in windy western New York, 1000 miles north of sunny south Georgia.

Hahira Polling Place

The Hahira Historical Society’s parking lot was full at 6:30, with people parking in front of the building to vote. I found some last-minute campaigners, as well.

The two sign wavers were the mother of Sandra K. Guest for State Court Judge and John Page, running for Lowndes County Commission District 5 (west). In the video you can hear Page say he hopes to be in a runoff. The election results so far look like it may indeed be Jody Hall and John Page in a runoff.

What kind of investigation can you do in a minute and a half? –Chris Gay for Coroner of Lowndes County @ Baseball 2012-07-14

Chris Gay is running for Coroner of Lowndes County. He spoke at a baseball reunion in Naylor, 14 July 2012.

I have no videos of his opponent, the incumbent Bill Watson, because I have never seen Watson at a public event.
