Longest at 2.5 minutes:

appointment to Parks and Rec

Commissioner Scottie Orenstein was not present at this Regular Session of the Lowndes County Commission.

Not on the agenda and not on the county’s website,

Chairman’s Announcement of Emergency Operations Center Open House

The applicant spoke for

6.a. Beer, Wine & Liquor License – Jack’s Chophouse, 4479 N. Valdosta Rd.

Videos: City to County KLVB, Grinder Pump, Bank, Computers, Health Ordinance, and Alcohol @ LCC 2018-07-23

Eight minutes to do your business: yesterday morning’s Lowndes County Commission Work Session.
Commissioner Demarcus Marshall took the day off from his work at the City of Valdosta
to be there.
Not clear the rest of them took it that seriously.
He and at least one other Commissioner did get some questions in.
And they did all show up, at least.
We’ll see if they’re all there for voting this evening at 5:30 PM.

Some interesting questions on the Continue reading

City to County KLVB, Grinder Pump, Bank, Computers, Health Ordinance, and Alcohol @ LCC 2018-07-24 2018-07-23

In an interesting version of a revolving door,
county appointee Michael H. McDowell’s KLVB term is expiring,
so is Valdosta appointee Bubba Highsmith’s,
and the county proposes appointing Highsmith.
Highsmith is

a State Farm Insurance Agent
.

Also on

the Lowndes County Commission agenda

for 8:30AM Monday morning are:

banking services
(looks like
Ameris Bank costs way less than BB&T, and SunTrust even less,
but Ameris has the best interest rate
),
a

computer bulk purchase
for $54,795.98, yet another

pump purchase
,
allegedly for $0 dollars because this is actually for specifications rather than actual purchase.

Typical Application: Residential Pump System, Triple “D” Pump Company

Finally, the tabled-from-last-meeting

Ordinance about Board of Health Rules
:
will the Commissioners have had time to read the one copy
the County Manager allows them?

Plus an

alcohol license

Videos: Turnberry, Branham, Peterson Road Lift Station, and Commissioner Comments @ LCC 2016-12-13

24 minutes on
REZ-2016-19 Turnberry at Thompson E-A to R-21
which changed to R-1
at the last minute,
14 minutes on
Bill Branham’s

REZ-2016-23 Copeland Road development
,
4 on
REZ-2016-24 Martin< 3 on REZ-2016-25 Cain’s Creekside RV Park,
and
3 on the

Peterson Road Lift Station Rehab
,
plus
almost 5 minutes of

Chairman and Commission Comments
!
Real discussion and revealing their opinions in public?
What’s gotten into them?
Did they see in advance

the VDT’s Sunlight on the horizon
?

Yet the Chairman said nobody could ask the audience to stand up on

REZ-2016-19 Turnberry at Thompson

and while they were waiting for the room to clear before

the next item could start

Videos: Health appointment, 7 rezonings, abandonment, Soil Erosion, Wastewater, and alcohol @ LCC 2016-12-12

Bill Branham’s

Copeland Road development

got six minutes of discussion, the longest in yesterday morning’s Work Session,
with others of the seven rezonings also getting discussion,
plus, surprisingly, the

proposed VOCA grant
, because the outgoing DA spoke.
They vote tonight at 5:30 PM.
I would like to compliment the Commissioners on asking questions and
having discussion in the Work Session.
Even ever-silent Joyce Evans spoke up about

the MIDS on-call bus system grant re-application
.

They’re going to

reappoint
Dr. Randy Smith to the Board of Health.
Chairman Bill Slaughter said:
“Inside your packets you have a letter from Dr. Grove supporting Dr. Smith.”

But we the citizens, taxpayers, and recipients of health care didn’t get to see that letter.
The Chairman went on to recommend Dr. Smith, and I thank him for making that recommendation in public where we could all see and hear it.
Dr. Smith is probably a fine board member: that’s not the point.
The point is if the public could see these things they might have useful input,
not to mention it’s the public’s business the Commission is doing.
Similarly Commissioners had

a quarterly financial report “before you”
,
but the public couldn’t see it.
If

tiny Effingham County can publish its County Commission packets,
mighty Lowndes County could to it, too
.

For the rezonings, see also the LAKE videos of the preceding Planning Commission meeting.
For the abandonment of unopened right of way on Avenue I, see the LAKE videos of last month’s Lowndes County Commission meeting.

Videos: Discussion, GLPC, abandonment, septic, pump, and VOCA @ LCC 2014-10-14

Some actual discussion!
20 minutes of it, on

6.b. REZ-2014-16 Bailey, Madison Hwy/Williams School Ln
,
at the 14 October 2014 Regular Session of the Lowndes County Commission.
With no discussion, they approved

a single-sourced pump replacement

and

the DA’s VOCA grant application
.
They

abandoned Water Oak Trail (not Water Oaks Drive)
,
and they

reappointed Jody Hall to the Planning Commission

with no discussion and no presentation by him.
The county now has a

Board Packet @ LCC 2014-10-13

The address is correct for the road abandonment public hearing
agenda item
The

board packet
,
unlike on
the agenda,
so if citizens had ready access to this board packet they’d know whether
they should show up tonight
at

yesterday morning’s Work Session

and tonight’s Regular Session
for
6.a. Abandonment of Unopened Right of Way off Water Oak Drive.

There’s one quote, from xylem, for the Continue reading

300x253 Map on Screen, in Water Oak Trail Road Abandonment, by John S. Quarterman, 13 October 2014

It’s
Water Oak Trail, not Water Oak Drive, for the

road abandonment
: how are people supposed to know to show up
for a public hearing when the address isn’t even on the right street?

Update 2014-10-14: The board packet
has the correct address, so if the county put that packet on its website the citizens wouldn’t be confused.
And the
lift pump replacement got a single quote for
$30,040.20, so this is yet another single-sourced non-competitive deal.
Why do Commissioners have no questions about that?

Plus an unscheduled

recognition of Leadership Lowndes attendees
,
a

Planning Commission
reappointment with no previous
advertisement,
yet another

water pump replacement
,
a

well and septic rezoning
on Madison Highway,
and a

legal grant
,
on the agenda.
