Videos: Appointments to Planning Commission & Library Board, Copeland Road rezoning, Holiday and meeting schedule, Jumping Gully Road Bridge over Bevel Creek @ LCC Regular 2025-11-12

At their Regular Session, the Lowndes County Commission tabled all the appointments, both to the Planning Commission and to the Library Board. As mentioned in the Work Session, they postponed the Copeland Road rezoning due to an error in advertising it. All those items will be heard in December, because in November and December they only have one meeting each month, working around the winter holidays.

They did unanimously approve the holiday and meeting schedules. And they approved 8.a. Local Bridge Replacement Project 0019937 Jumping Gully Road at Bevel Creek, although as For Consideration, since it is not a bid.

Both of these two meetings were on Wednesday because of the Memorial Day Holiday: the Work Session at 8:30 PM and the Regular Session at 5:30 PM of the Lowndes County Commission.

Update 2025-11-26: Videos: Appointments to Planning Commission & Library Board, Copeland Road rezoning postponed, Holiday and meeting schedule, Jumping Gully Road Bridge over Bevel Creek @ LCC Regular 2025-11-12.

Looks like they’re going to postpone the Copeland Road rezoning due to an error in advertising it. So that will be heard in December, because in November and December they only have one meeting each month, working around the winter holidays.

They’re also moving 8.a. Local Bridge Replacement Project 0019937 Jumping Gully Road at Bevel Creek on the agenda to be For Consideration, since it is not a bid.

Both of these two meetings were on Wednesday because of the Memorial Day Holiday: the Work Session at 8:30 PM and the Regular Session at 5:30 PM of the Lowndes County Commission.

Packet: Appointments to Planning Commission & Library Board, Copeland Road rezoning, Holiday and meeting schedule, Jumping Gully Road Bridge over Bevel Creek @ LCC 2025-11-12

Both meetings are on Wednesday this week because of the Memorial Day Holiday: the Work Session at 8:30 PM and the Regular Session at 5:30 PM of the Lowndes County Commission.

Here is the agenda.

They’ve got a rezoning asking for conditions to be removed from the Copeland Road subdivision, appointments to two boards (Planning and Library), a bridge replacement on Jumping Gully Road over Bevel Creek, and the 2026 Holiday Schedule and Commission Meeting Calendar.

Turns out that when Catherine Ammons resigned as Valdosta Assistant City Manager, she also quit the Lowndes County Library Board. Three people want to replace her.

The board packet, received in response to a LAKE open records request, is on the LAKE website. Images of each page are below.

For the rezoning case, see also the preceding Planning Commission meeting.

The board packet is on the LAKE website after we obtained it through an open records request.

$57,142.00 Transfer to Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority
for capital costs and operating expenses of parks and recreational facilities owned and operated by said Authority

A rare no-match federal grant: Acceptance of FY20 Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding brings the total expected expenditures from this Tuesday’s Regular Session down to less than a quarter million dollars:

$148,345.58 Val Tech Road Grading, Drainage, Base and Paving

I commend Lowndes County Utilities for moving ahead to fix the recent manhole collapse at the Bevel Creek Lift Station on GA 376 near Loch Laurel Road. See also Sewer line repair between manholes, Bevel Creek Lift Station @ LCC 2020-06-22.

Videos and packet: Millage, SPLOST VIII, Wastewater, roads, bridges, mosquitos, Construction Board @ LCC 2019-08-12

County Manager Joe Pritchard said Finance Director Stephanie Black has received a millage report from the Tax Commissioner. He and she will prepare something from it for the Lowndes County Commissioners for a later meeting.

The board packet is on the LAKE website, in response to a LAKE open records request.

$1.5 mllion on wastewater, SPLOST VIII, roads, bridges, mosquitos, Construction Board @ LCC 2019-08-12

The resolution to reimpose the SPLOST tax as SPLOST VIII, was not included with the agenda for the tax-paying public to see. LAKE has filed an open records request for the entire board packet. Perhaps the county will supply it before they vote tomorrow.

Four bids were received for LAS and Pump Station Improvements with the high bid at $3.3 million, and the low at $2.5 million, but apparently the county negotiated the low bidder, Doyle Hancock & Sons, down to $1,520,858.00. This is “for improvements to the LAS [Land Application Site, aka wastewater spray field], Bevel Creek, Francis Lake, and Coleman Road lift stations.” The LAS is between Grassy Pond and Pike Pond, a few thousand feet from the GA-FL line, in the Withlacoochee River watershed. Videos: fire truck, radios and phones, Hahira annexation, prison details @ LCC 2018-08-14

The most exciting thing last month was the new fire truck, on display outside, seen here driving off with its lights flashing:

Lights flashing, Fire Truck
See LAKE video.

This was the most recent Regular Session, because the Lowndes County Commission meetings for the end of August were cancelled.

County Manager Joe Pritchard again said he wanted higher staff approval limits for items in the budget. There was some question about campaign contributions on the Hahira rezoning and annexation; they didn’t know, but they approved it anyway. The longest discussion was on the Intrado phone system, which will have Lowndes County be the first south of Atlanta with text to 911. A suprising number of and variety of Commissioner questions on the 911 radios. The only question on the three utilities items was whether they were in the budget; they are. As usual, they rubberstamped the three Valdosta State Prison work details, with the only question being whether they were getting enough for the money. A: Yes, because prisoners work cheap.

Videos: Surprise Hahira annexation items @ LCC 2018-08-13

County Manager Joe Pritchard said he had two new agenda items for tomorrow night, both to do with a proposed annexation by Hahira. County Chairman Bill Slaughter said he atteneded the recent Hahira City Council meeting where that annexation was discussed, which was last Thursday, so I don’t follow why this wasn’t on the Lowndes County Commission agenda Friday with all the other items.

Lighting, mosquito, prison, radios, cameras, phones, 3 pumps, valves @ LCC 2018-08-13

It’s equipment day at the Lowndes County Commission. On the agenda for 8:30 this morning, firefighting Bullard thermal imaging cameras. Motorola public safety radios, Motorola mobile data terminals, and AT&T Intrado Phone System for E911 services, possibly the most expensive item at $244,324.00.

Lowndes County Emergency Operations Center

Prison work details (to do jobs locals could do), mosquito testing (fortunately, Lowndes does not spray for mosquitos). Lift station pumps at Bevel Creek (again, and it feeds the Land Application Site or LAS), and Hart Road/Skipper Bridge, a pump for Gorman Rupp Bypass, and Coleman Road Lift Station Check Valves. And of course an Addition to Basic Decorative Lighting District: Creekside West, Phase 3B, GA Hwy 122, west of Hahira on Franks Creek.

Videos: 3 for 2 VLMPO appointments, 2 – 1 rezonings, 3 water + credit cards, alcohol @ LCC 2017-02-14

Tuesday Chairman Bill Slaughter did say there will be a retreat Thursday and Friday this week, but he didn’t say where or what time of day. Yesterday afternoon they finally put on their website that it starts 8AM this morning at Quail Branch Lodge. Here’s hoping Commissioner Joyce Evans is well enough to attend.

In a refreshing change of procedure, Continue reading
