Where are the traditional media about Brooks County Board of Elections?

Patrick Davis provided some explanation of what the suspension issue was at the Brooks County Board of Elections, and then asked a bigger question: where are the traditional media when sunshine is needed?

Patrick Davis wrote yesterday for the Macon Examiner.com, Brooks Co. Board of Elections addresses voter disenfranchisement at meeting

The main reason behind the suspension is centered around his alleged participation in qualifying and certification irregularities along with accusations of voter disenfranchisement of local citizens in regard to a sample ballot for the upcoming July 31 election.

Collins insists it is a misunderstanding, and Nancy Duncan, the chairperson of the Brooks Board of Elections, echoes those sentiments and urged the Board of Elections not to involve the Secretary of State and/or other authorities.

Who are the Brooks County Board of Elections?

Who are the Brooks County Board of Elections, who don’t seem to know Georgia sunshine laws, and about whom election qualifying issues have been raised?

The man at the head of the table who was put on suspension by the board was Ken Collins, Election Supervisor, who has been in place for six months. According to the minutes of the 9 January 2012 Monthly Workshop and Regular Meeting of the Brooks County Board of Commissioners,

Commissioners present were: Mr. S. L. Jones, Chairman; Mr. Joe Wingate, Vice Chairman; Mr. James Maxwell; Mr. Howard Lawson, and Mr. Willie Cody. Others present were: Mr. Robert D. O’Barr, County Administrator; Ms. Patricia Williams, County Clerk; Mr. Vann Parrott, County Attorney; Mr. Mark Deatcher, Public Works Director; and various residents….

4. Election Supervisor – Emergency Selection

Due to an unforeseen illness, Mr. Johnny Spearman resigned as Brooks County Elections Supervisor which resulted in an emergency hiring of Mr. Kenneth Collins, previous applicant. Lowndes County Board of Elections has willingly offered their services for utilization during this transition due to time sensitivity with 2012 election events. Mr. Maxwell made the motion to hire Mr. Kenneth Collins as Brooks County Elections Supervisor, Mr. Lawson seconded. Vote was unanimous.

(That’s the most recent set of minutes listed on the Brooks County web page. Have the Brooks County Commissioners really not met since January?)

According to the Brooks County Commmissioners’ minutes of their Special Called Meeting of 13 July 2011:

On motion by Mr. Wingate, Board unanimously appointed Mr. Johnny Spearman as Elections Supervisor for Brooks County. Salary will be $32,000.00 annually.

OK, that’s the elections supervisor who resigned and was replaced by Ken Collins. But who are the Board of Elections?

Georgia Governor Nathan concerning this alleged suicide. —George Boston Rhynes

After the alleged suicide of inmate Terrell Rizer 19; while in the Valdosta-Lowndes County Jail; after being arrested and charged in the April 11, murder of Timothy McKinney; Georgia Governor Nathan Deal should issue an executive order as was done with the Quitman 10 alleged voter fraud case in Brooks County concerning this alleged suicide.

Moreover, this investigation should be conducted by an outer state agency and the other alleged suicides that has occurred in the Valdosta-Lowndes County Jail. Governor Deal should also investigate why Lowndes County is leading State of Georgia in jail deaths for whatever reasons and this investigation should be done by an outside agency!

Too often there are incidents of this nature that go unreported while American Citizens feels that the United States Justice Department knows about these types of incidents but little to nothing seems to end these alleged incidents of Americans CONSTITUTIONAL Rights Violation? But then who cares until they need a young man to volunteer to serve on foreign battlefields for the rights of others.

Represent the people —George Rhynes on the radio 2012-03-10

After praising Valdosta City Councilman Yost for standing up for
the people in his district, even though George sometimes doesn’t
agree with his positions, George Rhynes said:

It is indeed time that we begin to put people on these governing bodies


who gonna represent the best interests of the people.
I don’t care whether you’re black or white, Jew or Gentile,
Protestant or Catholic.
But it is time now for us to stop just putting someone on the council
because they look like us.
We need to put people on the Council and the
County Commissioners
who’s going to stand up as the founding fathers of our Republic.
And I mean the founding fathers of those who put themselves
in the civil rights struggle on the front lines to do what is right.

Then he said Valdosta City Councilman James Wright would
be on George’s radio program,
and he invited all the rest of them to appear on his show,
Magic 95, 950 AM.

Valdosta Mayor and Council are implicated in the private prison —John S. Quarterman @ VCC 2012 02 23



Valdosta City Council and Mayor, who may not have been following the private prison issue,
now know about it and are aware that they are all implicated in the private prison
decision, due to events at the Industrial Authority board meeting
and the Valdosta City Council meeting, both Thursday 23 February 2012.

After remarking that I’d rather be talking about the additional solar panels
recently installed on my farm workshop up here in the north end of the county,
I recapped the
case against a private prison
and referred the Valdosta City Council to

my LTE in the VDT of that morning
(Thursday 23 February 2012).
I remarked that I was disappointed the Industrial Authority

hadn’t done anything to stop the prison at its meeting earlier that same day.
Since they might be wondering what all this had to do with them, I pointed out that,
if I could use the word,
they were all implicated as mayor and council
in the private prison decision because

Jay Hollis, CCA’s Manager of Site Acquisition, in his Valdosta-Lowndes County, GA / CCA Partnership: Prepared Remarks of August 2010,
lavishly praised the Lowndes County Commission and Chairman and the
Valdosta City Council and mayor.
Although the mayor was different now, and maybe some of the council,
nonetheless it was the same offices of council and mayor, still implicated.
I asked for their opinions on that subject.
Per their custom, they did not offer any at that time.
So, maybe we’ll hear from them later.
Or maybe the Industrial Authority board will hear from them….

WCTV spins GABEO meeting as week-long protest

I suppose it is a week-long protest, especially

the 3PM march today,
but it’s also a meeting of a

legislative caucus.

Greg Gullberg wrote for WCTV yesterday,

Protesters Descend On Quitman For Weekend Long Rally:
Protesters gear up to rally against what they call voter intimidation revolving around the “Quitman 12”.



Hundreds of protesters from across Georgia descend on Quitman in
Brooks County.

They gathered at area restaurants like the Wiregrass Restaurant &
Bar Friday night. They’re gearing up for a weekend long rally
against what they call voter intimidation.

The “Quitman 12” is the focus of the march Saturday at the Quitman
court house. The 12 include three Brooks County School Board
members, along with nine other defendants who were indicted for
charges of voter fraud.

WCTV quoted George Rhynes, and also:

Latoya Hamilton is a Quitman resident and also a Protester.

“To me, being a small city like this, it’s the first time something
like this is being held in Quitman. It’s an honor being a part of
this. It’s pretty much history in the making,” Hamilton tells
Gullberg.

Appearances are expected by Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, Rep. Tyrone
Brooks and many more. Events start Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. The
march starts at 3:00 p.m.

I agree with her and with George, that it’s a historic event.

VSEB application is too long — John Robinson @ VCC 2012 02 23



John Robinson told the Valdosta City Council that he thought the
application for the

Valdosta Small Emerging Business (VSEB) Program
was too long and complicated compared to the one-page
application to do major construction work.

3PM today in Quitman: GABEO March for Justice to End Voter Intimidation and Voter Suppression

The Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials (GABEO) is holding

its general meeting in Quitman this weekend in support of the Quitman 10.
The big public event is this afternoon:

3:00 p.m. March for Justice to End Voter Intimidation and Voter Suppression (March from Shumate Street Church of Christ to Brooks County Courthouse)

In this video, George Rhynes interviews Rev. Floyd Rose about
how GABEO heard about the Quitman 10+2.




Rev. Rose also expresses hope that the local media will announce the GABEO meeting.
(The VDT did have a story on it the other day, although it doesn’t seem to be online.)
Amont many other points, he notes that the school board members of the
Quitman 10 were elected mostly by white voters in Brooks County.
