At a monthly meeting held during an election, the Lowndes County Board of Elections decided to re-open a polling station at a Valdosta State University (VSU) precinct, which hasn’t happened since 2009. The next step is for the VSU President to make a decision. Then, students, step up and staff it, and vote, please!

VALDOSTA — The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia plans to attend the Lowndes County Board of Elections meeting Tuesday.

This comes after the ACLU sent Deb Cox, elections supervisor, a letter urging the election board to open a polling location at the Valdosta State University main campus.

The Lowndes County Board of Elections will hold a Special Called Meeting on 8 July 2014, at 5:30 p.m., and a regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, 22 July 2014 at 9 a.m., to discuss precinct consolidation. The public is invited to attend.

Final qualifying for November elections

Four Three contenders for Valdosta City Council District 2, none of them incumbent Deidra White. Alvin Payton drew one challenger for District 4, and Robert Yost drew two challengers for District 6. Two out of three Valdosta School Board seats up for election are contested. And we’re up to four contenders for Mayor of Hahira. Plus 5 for the 4 Lake Park At Large seats, and just 3 for the 3 Remerton seats. -jsq

Qualifying through today (29 Aug 2013) for November elections

Hahira now has three contenders for Allen Cain’s former District 2 City Council place; he and District 4 Rose Adams are running for Mayor against incumbent Wayne Bullard. Four contenders now for four Lake Park At Large City Council places, and two for three in Remerton. Incumbent Deidra White has still not qualified for Valdosta City Council District 2, although two other people have. Tomorrow’s the last day to qualify. -jsq

Which new districts did the County Commission just vote for?

The VDT and the Commission’s district maps don’t agree, and the Board of Elections doesn’t know. David Rodock writes in the VDT today that County revives expanding Lowndes commission:
During a special meeting Monday, county commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to include two additional voting districts within Lowndes County.

The two proposed voting districts would allow for greater representation at County Commission meetings by allowing for an expansion of the current available voting representatives from three to five, while keeping a non-voting commission chairman.

Last year, this expansion failed in the legislature on a technicality. If the Commission and staff don’t make the same mistake, it seems likely the legislature will approve these new districts.
