Monday August 10th deadline to appeal tax valuations –VLCoC

Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce members just got a message from Bruce Allred, Government Affairs Council Chairman, saying:

MONDAY IS DEADLINE TO APPEAL PROPERTY TAX ASSESSMENTS!

You can look up your property on the Tax Assessors’ website: www.qpublic.net/ga/lowndes.

That Chamber message includes this useful information:

There are two methods to appeal your assessed value:

  1. In person. Take your property assessment notice with you to the Lowndes County Tax Assessors’ office at 302 North Patterson Street in Downtown Valdosta. Office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Telephone is 229-671-2540.
  2. By mail.
    1. Send a letter USPS POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN AUGUST 10:

      “My name is ______________________.
I am appealing the assessed value of (address).
      My telephone number is_________________________.”

    2. Download and complete this form:
      http://dor.georgia.gov/sites/dor.georgia.gov/files/related_files/document/LGS/Form/LGS_Appeal_of_Assessment_Revised_2012_PT311A.pdf
Mail it USPS POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN AUGUST 10.

      Mail to:
      Lowndes County Tax Assessors’ Office
      P.O. Box 1126
      Valdosta, GA 31603-1126

If you miss this year’s deadline, you can appeal next year.

The best time to discuss the value of your property with the Tax Assessor is between January 1 and April 1, or as soon as you receive your property assessment notice.

Except nobody I know got an assessment notice within that timefram, rather much later.

Which makes me wonder why can’t that August 10th deadline be extended to allow people the time the Tax Assessors didn’t give us?
