‘The Vagina Monologues’ to Support Haitian Women and Girls

VALDOSTA -- Valdosta State University will celebrate the strength and empowerment of women during the fifth annual benefit performance of Eve Ensler’s "The Vagina Monologues" at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 31-April 2, in the VSU Student Union Theater.

The Department of Women's and Gender Studies (WGST) will host the performances as part of the 2011 observance of V-Day, a global non-profit movement established in 1998 to end violence against women and girls. Faculty, staff and students will perform the award-winning episodic play based on 200 interviews Ensler conducted with women about sex, relationships and violence against women.

Each year, the global V-Day celebration focuses on a specific group of marginalized women. The 2011 V-Day Spotlight Campaign highlights the courage and vision of the women and girls of Haiti. According to news reports, sexual violence against females has increased at an alarming rate since the devastating earthquake in January 2010. Funds raised at V-Day events throughout the world will support a national campaign in Haiti that is addressing sexual violence through art, advocacy, safe shelter and legal services.

Dr. Tracy Woodard-Meyers, WGST director, said that in addition to the women and girls of Haiti, the VSU campaign will also support local efforts established through the WGST Sexual Violence Education Program, which strives to promote responsible sexual relationships, work toward coordinated intervention and cultural change, and challenge men to embrace their roles as allies in violence prevention. Proceeds will also benefit Valdosta’s The Haven rape crisis center, which has been providing emergency shelter and services for victims of family violence and sexual assault since 1988.

Tickets to each performance, which costs $10 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors, may be purchased in advance at the WGST office in Carswell Hall, located at 1526 N. Oak St. Tickets may also be purchased at the door the night of the event, but since performances have sold out in the past, organizers encourage people to purchase tickets in advance. Call WGST at 229-249-4842 for more information. Read more about the global V-Day effort at http://drc.vday.org/ .

Georgia has a trust fund for persons with brain or spinal injury which provides services and equipment not covered by private insurance, Medicaid or Medicare. Georgia residents with an eligible brain or spinal injury may apply for items or services related to the injury, but approval is not automatic.

In the past, however, a diverse number of services and needs have been approved, such as walkers; corrective shoes; various therapies: swimming, physical, neuromuscular, behavioral, family, life-skills, psychosocial, social skills; academic tutoring; adaptive computers; cognitive rehab; reading and comprehension programs; visual aids; voice-recognition software; zoom-text software; adult-care services; attendant care; bathroom modifications; diapers; wheelchair lift for van; hand-control system for vehicle; portable ramp and vehicle modifications.

While the trust fund can help financially, the support group will provide information, encouragement and a place where survivors and families can share their experiences.

More information on the Brain & Spinal Injury Trust Fund Commission, visit www.bsitf.state.ga.us; or call 1-888-233-5760. For more on the support group, contact commission member Alan Carter, 229-671-4977; or e-mail alanbcarter@bellsouth.net

The school social work department for Lowndes County Schools attempts to overcome barriers hindering school success. Often the needs are financial such as the need for medication, glasses or services not covered by any other available program. In the past, we have managed to locate community partners to help with these needs. Due to the economy, many of our resources are limited or non existent.

Therefore, we are collecting gently used or broken items. The Green School Recycling Program provides funds to our department in return for these items. The funds are used to provide resources for students in need. The devices do not have to work. The items collected include:

Cell Phones
Laptop Computers (We do not accept: desktop computers, tower computers, monitors, printers, scanners, faxes, modems, keyboards, mouses, or TV's, etc.)

South Health District Adolescent Health program will sponsor in observance of Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month.

We will have music, spoken word, entertainment, and a live band on stage! We will be grilling out! We will have a interactive health expo scavenger hunt! ... and we need you!

We would like to invite you/your organization to set up a booth or exhibit at our interactive health expo and be a part of the scavenger hunt that the teens will participate in. Each teen will have a set of questions and they will have to go through the expo to find the answers about the organizations that are participating ... so they will actually have to talk to you to find out information about your program or agency! Once the teens have completed their scavenger hunt questionnaire, then they can turn that in to get a ticket for their lunch.

Set up for the day will begin around
12 PM -- the event will kick off at 1 PM and last until 4 PM.

We would love to have you attend and help us educate our community's young people about the services and opportunities that exist in our area. If you are interested, please email me and I will put you on the list for updates and detailed information as we get closer to the date!

Thank you in advance for your consideration! Let me know if you have questions!

We meet every 2nd Sun at 5:00 PM at the Hahira Recreation Center.

The mission of the Hahira/Lowndes County Community Outreach Development Corporation (HLCCODC)  is to provide programs to assist at-risk families with substance abuse issues and prevent or delay initiation of any drug and over a life time create a drug free community.  Its purpose is to coordinate a comprehensive countywide and/or communitywide substance abuse prevention and public health system through activities including but not limited to:  assessment, planning, implementation, securing sustainability resources, recommending sub-grants and evaluation.

The HLCCODC is seeking area volunteers to assist in its second annual Cotillion.  The first Cotillion was held in June 2009. Estell Rose is the chairperson and Sheila Warren is the co-chairperson.  Its purpose is to present our finest young ladies to society—academically, morally and socially; and to provide positive reinforcements to assist them as they embark upon womanhood.  Junior and senior high school students are identified by school administrators from Lowndes, Valdosta, Brooks, Cook, Lanier, Echols, Berrien and surrounding counties as young ladies who meet a strict set of criteria involving their academic and community behavior.

Volunteers to help with the Cotillion may contact Estell Rose at estellrose@bellsouth.net or call 229-630-3120

Georgia’s Community Care Services Program (CCSP)

If someone you care for is eligible for nursing home placement but would like to stay in his or her own home, you may want to consider the benefits of the Community Care Services Program (CCSP). CCSP is a Medicaid waiver program that serves as an alternative to nursing home placement. The program provides home and community-based services to people who are elderly and/or functionally impaired or disabled. By providing these services, CCSP helps recipients remain in their own homes, the homes of caregivers, or in other community settings as long as possible.

MOORE STREET CLINIC

is the university-based brief therapy center for the Marriage and Family Therapy graduate program. The Moore Street Clinic trains graduate students in family therapy and provides brief therapy to people who come from all over south Georgia and north Florida, most commonly Valdosta, the VSU campus, and surrounding communities. The MSC is located in Valdosta at 210 West Moore Street, between Patterson and Oak Streets. To schedule an appointment, call (229) 219-1281 Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and 11:00 am. If you cannot call during these times, call anytime and leave a message. Let us know the best time to reach you and an intake coordinator will call you back.

Who may come to the Moore Street Clinic?

Any individual person, married or unmarried couples, children, elderly, couples who are or are not living together, families of all varieties, regardless of legal status, roommates, transgendered, gay, lesbian, and bisexual persons--all are welcome at the Moore Street Clinic. Family therapy, sometimes called systems therapy or relational therapy, is a particular way of thinking that helps people make the changes that they want to make. Even though the word, "family" suggests that family therapists work only with whole families, this is not the case. Family therapists work with individuals, couples, groups, and families. Family therapy has been found to be helpful to people with many different kinds of problems. These might include:

We offer our services to all people who seek them, regardless of age, gender, race, political or religious affiliation, sexual orientation, marital status, education, economic status, disability, or ethnic background.

How much do I have to pay? The Moore Street Clinic is a not-for-profit clinic. Our mission is two-pronged: to provide low-cost services that are available to everyone, regardless of ability to pay and to train advanced level graduate students in the art and science of brief therapy. As a result, we charge for each session according to a sliding scale that is based on family size and income, so fees can begin at $0.

No one will be denied services based on their inability to pay. When you call for the first appointment, someone will talk with you about your fee, so that you will know what it is prior to your first meeting with your therapist. If your circumstances are such that you can't pay anything at all, just let us know. Services are free to Valdosta State University students, faculty and employees.

MAY

MAY was Foster Care Awareness Month, and we need foster and adoptive parents…”You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent.”

There are over 300 Lowndes County children in foster care. There are only 149 beds available in the county, forcing DFCS to send children to other counties while they are in care. There are nine children free for adoption who have not had resources identified for them. Foster parents must take 20 hours of certification and annual refresher courses.  If you are interested in information on becoming a foster or adoptive parent, call

229-333-5200 for Mark Harper.

Flu vaccine

“Many people believe that if they have not gotten the flu or the flu vaccine by January, they are in the clear,” stated Debra Adams, RN, APRN, District Nursing and Clinical Director. “This is not true.

The CDC recommends certain groups getting vaccinated as soon as possible because they are at highest risk of getting the flu or spreading the flu to vulnerable populations. Those priority groups for getting the vaccine are pregnant women, caregivers for infants younger than 6 months of age, healthcare and emergency medical services personnel, persons from 6 months through 24 years of age, and persons 25 to 64 years of age who have health conditions, such as asthma and chronic congestive heart failure. Although priority groups have been highlighted, there are no restrictions on who can get the seasonal or H1N1 vaccines at this time.

For more information on NIVW or receiving your flu vaccine call your local health department, South Health District at 229-333-5290 or visit www.flu.gov.
