August 5, 2010

Members present: Jane Osborn, Cheryl Oliver, Leslie Jacobs, Terri Whitlock, Karen Yawn, Gretchen Quarterman, Karen Nolan, Adann-Kennn Alexxandar, & visitor: Beth Paul.

The meeting was called to order by organization president, Jane Oliver. We met at Hildegard’s.

News from members:

~Terri Whitlock / The American Red Cross: The Low Country Boil occurred Sat., Aug. 7th. They were hoping for a big turnout & we hope it was a huge success! They will also have a golf tournament on Aug. 26. This will take place the day before the United Way Day of Caring, which begins the Blackout period for United Way agencies. No fundraising takes place during that time, to allow the community opportunity to pledge their support to the Greater Valdosta United Way. Please show your support when you are asked to contribute!

~Karen Yawn / The Haven: They will have a Silent Auction & Dance on Aug. 14. Cost is only $10 per person & will be from 7:00-10:00.

~Cheryl Oliver / The Turner Center for the Arts: Monday, the Gallery will be open from 5:00-7:00. On Aug. 22, there will be another Girl’s Night Out. A High Cotton Tournament will be held at 7:00. Cost is $20 per person. A Time Capsule will be buried on 8-27-10 at 6:00 at Drexel Park. It is slated to be unearthed 50 years from now – if any of you are still around!  Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Coat opened on Thursday. Go check these great opportunities out!

On the Treasurer’s side: The bank account has been fully activated at The Bank of Valdosta, which we have just been informed will now be named the Sunrise Bank. Funds in the Roundtable account are $375.49.

~Adann Alexxandar / Wiregrass Technical College: Adann just happened to be at Hildegard’s today & joined our meeting. He is working in the Adult Education Dept., with GED classes.

~Gretchen Quarterman / LAKE & Lowndes Democrats: Reminded everyone to go vote on Tuesday. The next meeting of the Lowndes Democrats will take place on Sept. 13th, due to the Labor Day holiday. The group meets each month at Hildegard’s at 6:00. Gretchen reminded us to spend our money locally; go to the farmer’s markets & support our farmers.

~Beth Paul / Girl Scouts: Beth is new to the area & new to Girl Scouts. Please welcome her when you get the chance! Pamphlets were distributed to encourage signing up with Girl Scouts.

~Jane Osborn / Community Calendar: If you aren’t on Jane’s email list for the Community Calendar, you are missing out on a wealth of information. A sampling of things she knows about are as follows: The Kids Are People Too Fair will be held on 8-14 at Drexel Park. Tues., Aug. 10 at 11;30 at Azalea’s in the Holiday Inn, there will be a Prevent Child Abuse Lowndes County! Changing the Culture of Long-Term Care Symposium will take place at VSU on Sept. 10, from 8:00-5:00. This is free! There will be a Cake Decorating Contest at Valdosta Middle School. This is a fund-raiser to benefit an exchange program between schools in Valdosta & Ghana & will be held Sun., Aug. 29, from 1:00-7:00 PM.

~Leslie Jacobs / Jacobs’ Ladder Therapeutic Riding Center: We are preparing 6 riders for the State Special Olympics Show, which will take place on Aug. 20-22. School programs will be starting up soon & volunteers are needed for the weekday mornings when school children come with their classes.

This concludes the news from the August meeting. Please plan to join us on the first Thursday, in the month of September at Hildegard’s, at 12:30.

Leslie Jacobs,

Secretary
