Valdosta Civic Roundtable

Members present: Shannon Jenkins, Donald Davis, Jane Osborn, Dennis Marks, Becky Barnes, Jerome Tucker, Gretchen Quarterman, Julie Halter, & Leslie Jacobs. Visitors: John & Peggy Gates, Karen Nolan, Thea Spriggs, & Tina Worms.

*John Gates & his wife, Peggy: They are with the Humane Society; told us of the upcoming Bark in the Park, on May 15th. This event will primarily hope to place adoptable pets into suitable homes. Screening process will still be in place. John & Peggy, we hope you will continue to join us each month!

 

*Dennis Marks: Following is from Dennis: “Lowndes County Community Action Team, Here’s your chance to show your support for Early Reading in Lowndes County. Georgia Rotary Presidents are battling to see which community is most supportive of early reading. You can vote every day from April 1 to April 14. The first vote every day is free. Extra votes are $3 each, which buys an Imagination Library book for a child in Lowndes County. Please vote at http://www.ferstfoundation.org/FortheLoveofReading/Rotary2010/default.htm. Vote early and often! Please also share this email with your friends and neighbors. Let’s see if our community can be Winnersville for Early Reading!!

Dennis also mentioned the next meeting of the Lowndes Democrats, which will occur on Mon., & the annual barbeque for meeting with the candidates on July 1st.

 

*Shannon Jenkins: Girl Scouts serve 125 counties; still have some cookies, even though sales were up this year; they also desperately need leaders. John asked about cookies sent to G.I.’s & Shannon told him that Cookies from Home is still in operation.

 

*Donald Davis: The Huxford Society will be offering genealogical assistance on May 15th, in Homerville.

 

Donald has been busy going through many of the paper records left by Louie Peeples White & said it is a very time consuming, but interesting task.

 

*Julie Halter: VSU Continuing Ed & Learning in Retirement; Spring break camps will be held next week. There are a variety of themes to choose from. Call 245-6484 for information. Learning in Retirement classes will start very soon. You can call the same number to get details on that.

 

*Thea Spriggs: Visiting with us today from Moody AFB. She is an energy engineer, focusing on ways to conserve energy. Earth Day will be coming up on April 22 & events will be happening around that time.

 

*Gretchen Quarterman: LAKE (Lowndes Area Knowledge Exchange) meeting will take place on Tues. at 5:30 at the Flavor of New Orleans. There will be an energy & environmental exchange public meeting on Apr. 27 about Bio-Mass with the EPD.

 

*Jerome Tucker: CPIE still busy mentoring in schools. In Sept. they will have their 20th anniversary! Congrats Jerome & the many who works so hard for our area students!! There will be a housing conference on 4-13 in Colquitt, GA. Jerome is working on many projects & just recently came back from Athens. We also want to thank Jerome & his coworkers at Ace Electric for hosting the Roundtable members this month & providing lunch!

 

*Becky Barnes: Red Cross Blood Services; they are open 6 days a week. She spoke this month about needing platelet donors, which is necessary for chemo patients in their recovery.

 

*Karen Nolan: visiting as Jane’s guest today, Karen used to work in several area agencies & is now a social worker in her own practice on Plum Street. Glad to have you with us, Karen!

 

*Jane Osborn: If you haven’t returned your US Census Form, please do so!  There is a meeting of the Homeless Coalition on Mon. at the Leila Ellis building on Lee St. The “Homeless for a Night” was rescheduled for Apr. 16-17. There are many free events & shows open to the community at VSU! You have no excuses to have nothing to do in Valdosta! It is Prevent Child Abuse Month. There are pinwheels on the Courthouse lawn to signify the number of child abuse cases in Lowndes County. There will be a free summer camp sponsored by the DHR, from May 21-Aug. 9. Call 866 371-8222 for information. A new Lion’s Club is forming here locally. Call Clinton Holloway at 229 591-3938 for details.

 

*Leslie Jacobs: Jacobs’ Ladder is hosting a Horse Show on Sat., Apr. 17 from 9-3:00. Bring a lawn chair & see the wonderful special riders competing for ribbons! We will have breakfast & lunch items for purchase. The Belk Charity Day has been set for Sat., May 1st. Tickets are $5 & can be purchased from Leslie by calling 229 794-1188.

 

 

 

We are considering having the next Valdosta Civic Roundtable at Hildegards on May 6. Stay tuned for confirmation.
