Members present: Jane Osborn, Donald Davis, Jerome Tucker, Dennis Marks, Cheryl Oliver, Harriet Messcher, Terri Whitlock, Regina Wisenbaker, Shannon Jenkins, Suzanne Ewing, Gretchen Quarterman, Katie Hardin, & Leslie Jacobs.

The meeting was called to order by Jane. The Treasurer’s Report was given by Cheryl. The bank still owes $88 in erroneous fees charged. Bank balance is $309.65. Money collected in dues goes toward the December meeting, which will be held again at the Turner Center. Paid members attend for free, others may attend, but must first RSVP, & are asked to pay $15 for lunch, which will probably be catered by Covington’s. Attendees are reminded to pick up a small suitcase & stuffed animal to be given to children in DFCS here in Lowndes County. Nominations for the Louie Peeples White Community Service Award should be turned in to Jane before the next meeting on Nov. 5th. Email your suggestions, please.

Cheryl Oliver: The Turner Center – A pre-performance dinner @ 6:00 is $15 per person, then watch Illusionaire on Oct. 20, & Of Mice & Men on Nov. 8. These are the first two of the Presenter Series productions. Call for tickets 229 247-ARTS. There are new exhibits to see also at the Turner Center.

Harriet Messcher: LAMP - Save the date for the 2009 Festival of Trees Gala at the Crescent on 11-20 @ 6:30. This is sponsored by the Valdosta Board of Realtors to benefit LAMP.

Dennis Marks: Rotary – The club is providing one book per month to homes with children under 5 yrs. Old. The Lowndes County Democratic Party is now meeting at Hildegards downtown. Members are reminded that early voting starts on Oct. 13th.

Gretchen Quarterman: LAKE; Lowndes Area Knowledge Exchange. They have a website where many local topics & events are given.

Shannon Jenkins: Girl Scouts – Leaders are needed! The STEM’s program will be starting up at VSU.

                                ACTO, an Alzheimer’s care group is having a Walk on 10-17.

Jerome Tucker: CPIE – They are working in 5 elementary schools with mentors. If you want to be a mentor, there will be a training on 10-29.

                              The Ag Expo will be in Moultrie from Oct. 20-22.

                              Career Day will be held at J.L. Lomax on 10-30

                              The Red Cross needs blood.

                              The Boy Scouts need more troops for area boys.

Terri Whitlock: Red Cross – There is a need for Disaster Teams. There are classes offered every other Sat. on First Aid & CPR. Call for details. 242-7404.

Regina Wisenbaker: The Haven – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month & there are many activities planned. If you have an old cell phone, it can be turned in to Verizon & the Haven will get it for

one of their women in need.

Suzanne Ewing: VSU Continuing Education Center/ Learning in Retirement – The Fall schedule of courses is available. Call 245-6484 for more information.

Katie Hardin: Hospice of South Georgia & Langdale Hospice – There are training classes scheduled for new volunteers on Oct. 20-21. Call to register or for questions: 671-8375.

Donald Davis: Lowndes County Historical Society – The new “Yesterday & Today” was given out. There will be a Sesquicentennial Preview Dinner on Oct. 13. Social hour & book signings at 6:00, dinner at 7:00. A fitting tribute to Louie Peeples White was included in this edition. Another reminder: elect someone in the volunteer services for the award named in her honor, as soon as possible!

Jane Osborn: There are many concerts scheduled for the Valdosta Symphony’s 20th Anniversary. Contact VSU Music Dept. for info.

               The 6th Annual Doug Henderson III Memorial Golf Tournament takes place on Oct. 15th at the Valdosta Country Club. Call 548-7566.

               VSU Theatre & Dance is presenting “All My Sons” this month, & “Damn, Yankees” in Nov. Please call 333-5973.

               WIC is available & should be used by more mothers with children. Call (800) 228-9173.

Leslie Jacobs: Jacobs’ Ladder – Volunteers are needed for the school day programs. Currently special needs children from Cook & Berrien Counties are participating. They come on Wed.-Fri. AMs. Call if you are interested in helping put smiles on these children’s faces. 794-1188.
