We want to do this right.&rdquo;&#8230;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nDuPont wants to mine 4,063 acres &#8220;for titanium oxide, zircon, and other minerals&#8221;.\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nEnvironmentalists and local residents asserted that DuPont&#8217;s\r\nproposed method of excavating 25 to 50 feet deep would affect\r\ndrinking water wells and that the dust and truck traffic from the\r\noperation would hurt property values and the quality of life.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nDuPont planned to separate the mineral sands from the rest and then\r\ntruck that to its facility in Starke for final processing.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWell, maybe they won&#8217;t do that once more people realize the\r\nproblems such mining in a sensitive watershed could cause.\r\n<p>\r\nMeanwhile, citizens have demonstrated that activism works,\r\neven with $60 billion market cap DuPont.\r\n<p>\r\nHere&#8217;s some of what the citizens did,\r\naccording to\r\nDerby Waters for the Press-Sentinel of Jesup 22 August 2014,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepress-sentinel.com\/articles\/2014\/08\/22\/news\/doc53f798edbafeb351527937.txt\">\r\nCrowd hears more of DuPont&#8217;s mining plans<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nA standing-room-only crowd of some 300 local residents filled the\r\nmain building at Cracker Williams Recreation Center Tuesday night to\r\ndiscuss plans by the DuPont corporation to mine in Wayne County.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nHeavy attendance at meetings of the county commissioners and a push\r\nfor a local zoning ordinance are expected to follow this first\r\nmeeting called by the Concerned Neighbors of Wayne County.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nConcerned residents in the area of the proposed mines, elected\r\nofficials, the environmental savvy and the just-interested listened\r\nto speakers discuss what DuPont&#8217;s permit request to the Department\r\nof Natural Resources (DNR) may mean for the county.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThese are all tactics that could work with many other threats\r\nto our local environment, such as that Sabal Trail fracked methane pipeline.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"After only a few weeks of organized opposition by citizens, including Satilla Riverkeeper and activists from as far away as Waycross, mighty DuPont has had to think again about mining Wayne County near Jesup.
