Coal ash in Alabama and Georgia landfills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/environment\/index.ssf\/2014\/08\/oregon_department_of_state_lan.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:250px\" src=\"http:\/\/media.oregonlive.com\/environment_impact\/photo\/15647222-large.jpeg\"><\/a>\r\nOregon\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/environment\/index.ssf\/2014\/08\/oregon_department_of_state_lan.html\">\r\ndenying a permit for a coal dock on the Columbia River Monday<\/a>\r\nmay seem far away, but the effects of coal ash are right here\r\nin Lowndes County.\r\nEffects that an Alabama county is calling a toxic chemical civil rights violation in the Arrowhead Landfill in Uniontown.\r\n<p>\r\nAP reported 14 August 2014,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/tuscaloosa\/index.ssf\/2014\/08\/epa_investigating_claims_west.html\">\r\nEPA investigating claims west Alabama landfill violates civil rights of black property owners<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cleanenergy.org\/2013\/12\/22\/five-years-since-kingston-perry-county-alabama-is-still-waiting-for-solutions\/\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.cleanenergy.org\/files\/2013\/12\/RubyHolmes-300x203.png\"><\/a>\r\nIt&#8217;s not the first time that the Arrowhead has been in the news. In\r\n2009, an estimated 3.9 million tons of coal ash was dumped at the\r\nlandfill. It was brought in after a Tennessee Valley Authority dam\r\nbreached in east Tennessee, spilling toxic ash into a river and\r\ndamaging about 300 acres. To date, it&#8217;s the largest coal ash spill\r\nin U.S. history.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nMuch of that ash ended up being dumped at the landfill in Perry\r\nCounty, which in return received <!--more-->an estimated $4.1 million.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/landfill-is-in-aquifer-recharge-zone.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3815\/9633071490_84a550ce00_m.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nSome of that same coal ash from the TVA spill in Tennessee\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/u-s-epa-ga-dnr-ga-health-dept-and-landfill-in-lowndes-county-epa-2013-11-14.html\">\r\nwas shipped to the Pecan Row Landfill in Lowndes County, Georgia,\r\nwhich spread some of it on its roads<\/a>,\r\nwhich are\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/landfill-is-in-aquifer-recharge-zone.html\">in an aquifer recharge zone for the Floridan Aquifer\r\nand a quarter mile uphill from the Withlacoochee River<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nJoan Walker wrote for Footprints 22 December 2013,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cleanenergy.org\/2013\/12\/22\/five-years-since-kingston-perry-county-alabama-is-still-waiting-for-solutions\/\">Five years since Kingston: Perry County, Alabama\u2019s Toxic Tragedy<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote>\r\nCoal ash-laden runoff from the Arrowhead landfill carries up to 80 times EPA&#8217;s legal limit for arsenic in drinking water\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWhy shouldn&#8217;t we expect the same kind of runooff from the Pecan Row Landfill?\r\n<p>\r\nPecan Row was privatized some years back and is supposedly\r\noverseen by the Deep South Solid Waste Authority, to which\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cleanenergy.org\/2013\/12\/22\/five-years-since-kingston-perry-county-alabama-is-still-waiting-for-solutions\/\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.cleanenergy.org\/files\/2013\/12\/HighResLeachate-300x200.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nthe Lowndes County Commission appoints members yet\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/lowndes-county-says-it-doesnt-know-whos-on-a-board-to-which-it-appoints-members.html\">\r\ndoesn&#8217;t know who&#8217;s on it<\/a>,\r\nand\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/tipping-fees-vs-host-fees-from-veolia.html\">can&#8217;t or won&#8217;t account for tipping fees received<\/a>.\r\nNow there&#8217;s another question: did ADS get millions of dollars for accepting\r\nthat toxic coal ash into Lowndes County?\r\n<p>\r\nThe same ADS to which the same County Commission\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/ads-fails-to-recycle-appeals-dss-ruling-anyway.html\">\r\ngave an exclusive franchise for trash collection<\/a>\r\nand along with which the county is suing a local business.\r\n<p>\r\nDoes anything smell bad to you about all this?\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Oregon denying a permit for a coal dock on the Columbia River Monday may seem far away, but the effects of coal ash are right here in Lowndes County.
