GA Power did not announce the first round of ASI deliver\r\n50MW of clean solar energy at an &ldquo;ALL IN&rdquo; cost\r\nof $.085 cents per kWh for the next 20 years, nor did they\r\nannounce that this round for ASI RFP for 495MW of large scale solar\r\nbids were submitted on May 4th will come in under $.08 cents per KWh\r\n&ldquo;ALL IN&rdquo;!! They do not want rate payers to know Solar\r\nhas passed Grid Parity it is now cheaper than any conventional form\r\nof electricity, especially if you include environmental compliance\r\nand Nuclear whip charges in GA !!&#8221;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/hot-topics\/nuclear.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c3246a2bc970b-pi.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nPresumably he meant the nuclear CWIP or\r\nConstruction Work in Progress\r\nthat lets Georgia Power\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/11\/georgia-power-raising-rates.html\">\r\nraise rates<\/a> (they have it for &#8220;natural&#8221; gas, too),\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/08\/new-nukes-make-no-financial-sense-financial-expert-to-ga-psc.html\">without which Georgia Power wouldn&#8217;t\r\nbe involved in<\/a>\r\nthat\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/nukes-have-always-been-a-government-sponsored-boondogle-as-cover-for-nuclear-weapons-production-john-pate.html\">\r\nbig-bet boondoggle<\/a>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/why-are-you-gambling-on-nuclear-instead-of-solar-gloria-tatum-so-2013-05-22.html\">\r\ngamble on nuclear instead of solar<\/a>, and remember,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/we-can-charge-you-even-if-its-cancelled-cwipped-georgia-power.html\">\r\nthey can charge you even if it&#8217;s cancelled<\/a>!\r\n<p>\r\nMeanwhile Georgia Solar Utilities Inc. post on its facebook page 30 January 2013\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GeorgiaSolarUtilitiesInc\/posts\/651300494930764\">\r\nSimon Solar Farm Time Lapse<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThe monumental project that the Executives of Georgia Solar\r\nUtilities (GaSU) tweaked and re-tweaked, until finally proving to\r\nRegulators and the Utilities that solar CAN be deployed in Georgia\r\nusing NO state or ratepayer subsidies and cause NO upward pressure\r\non electric rates is finally installed. This 30 MW project has moved GA from being almost at\r\nthe bottom of clean solar energy development to one of the top\r\nstates.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;I have picked up where my Grandfather Simons left off and am\r\nfarming again on the land&#8221; said Steve Ivey, the project&#8217;s creator.\r\n&#8220;It is the exact same concept &mdash; using the sun to make a crop.\r\nGrandaddy&#8217;s crop was cotton and my crop is clean energy.&#8221;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nGeorgia Power does mention this project and this ribbon cutting\r\nin its 15 May 2014\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psc.state.ga.us\/factsv2\/Document.aspx?documentNumber=153378\">\r\nUpdate to the Renewable Resource Action Plan and Time Table<\/a>\r\nin\r\nGeorgia Public Service Commission\r\nDocket # 24505\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psc.state.ga.us\/factsv2\/Docket.aspx?docketNumber=24505\">\r\nGeorgia Power\u2019s 2007 Application for Approval of an Integrated Resource Plan<\/a>\r\n(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eenews.net\/assets\/2014\/05\/16\/document_ew_03.pdf\">PDF<\/a>:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nIn July of 2011, the Georgia Public Service Commission\r\n(&ldquo;GPSC&rdquo; or the &ldquo;Commission&rdquo;) approved\r\nGeorgia Power Company&#8217;s (&ldquo;Georgia Power&rdquo; or the\r\n&ldquo;Company&rdquo;) plan to purchase energy from up to 50\r\nmegawatts (&ldquo;MW&rdquo;) of solar capacity; this program is\r\nreferred to as the Large Scale Solar program (&ldquo;LSS&rdquo;).\r\nThe Company signed 20-year power purchase agreements\r\n(&ldquo;PPAs&rdquo;) in December 2011 for 49 MW of solar energy with\r\ntwo developers. Simon Solar Farm, LLC was contracted to build a 30\r\nMW project near Social Circle, Georgia, and Solar Design and\r\nDevelopment, LLC (&ldquo;SDD&rdquo;) was contracted to build solar\r\nprojects totaling 19 MW on sites in Mitchell and Meriwether\r\ncounties.<small><sup>1<\/sup><\/small> The Simon Solar Farm, now owned\r\nand operated by Silicon Ranch Corporation, became commercially\r\noperational in mid-December 2013, ahead of schedule, and hosted a\r\nribbon cutting ceremony on May 13, 2014. Origis Energy, as the new\r\nowner of the SDD facilities, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on\r\nFebruary 11, 2014 at the Camilla (Mitchell County) site, where the\r\n16 MW facility went into commercial operation shortly thereafter. A\r\nsecond SDD site, the 3 MW Camp site located in Meriwether County,\r\nwas commercially operational as of December 2013. The Simon Solar\r\nFarm and Origis solar facilities will sell output as qualifying\r\nfacilities until the LSS program&#8217;s required Commercial Operation\r\nDate (&ldquo;COD&rdquo;) of June 1, 2015.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"font-size:80%\">\r\n<small><sup>1<\/sup><\/small>\r\nSolar Design and Development, LLC sold the Facility and\r\ntransferred the applicable LSS PPAs to Origis Energy, a transaction\r\nthat was approved by the GPSC on March 12, 2013.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThis same update included a copy of the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)\r\nwith the U.S. Army for\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/05\/30-mw-solar-times-3-army-bases-in-georgia-with-georgia-power.html\">\r\nthe three Georgia Power 30 MW solar projects on Army bases in Georgia<\/a>.\r\nNeither those Army solar projects nor this Simon Solar project were\r\npart of\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/more-solar-by-georgia-power-ga-psc.html\">\r\nthe 525 MW more solar power GA PSC required of Georgia Power last summer<\/a>.\r\nAll these Army and Social Circle projects are just Georgia Power finally\r\ngetting around to satisfying its 2007 IRP.\r\nWhich is good, but not enough.\r\nIt should be doubling its amount of solar power each year if it wants\r\nto even stop falling further behind California in solar deployments.\r\nA year after I pointed out to Georgia Power CEO Paul Bowers\r\nand Southern Company CEO Tom Fanning at the SO stockholder meeting\r\nlast year that\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/georgia-missing-out-on-solar-jobs-behind-new-jersey-and-michigan.html\">\r\nGeorgia didn&#8217;t have as much solar power as the\r\n1,000 megawatts already deployed by smaller New Jersey<\/a>,\r\nit still doesn&#8217;t.\r\nAt this year&#8217;s Southern Company meeting there were\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/05\/slight-changes-at-southern-company-so-2014-05-28.html\">slight changes<\/a> such as a display solar car charging station,\r\nnobody sneered at solar as a &#8220;niche play&#8221;,\r\nand Fanning said SO was involved in two energy storage development projects.\r\nSo maybe mighty SO and Georgia Power will really get going on solar power soon.\r\n<p>\r\n-jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A ribbon cutting for 30+ MW of solar power in Social Circle, Georgia, with no media coverage, other than a Georgia Power docket update buried at GA PSC.
