Swartz wrote for EnergyWire 16 May 2014,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eenews.net\/stories\/1059999687\">\r\nGeorgia Power plan would install solar arrays on 3 Army bases<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiapower.com\/about-energy\/energy-sources\/solar\/solar-projects\/3x30.cshtml\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiapower.com\/images\/about-energy\/dark-blue_Georgia-3x30_lrg.png\"><\/a>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiapower.com\/about-energy\/energy-sources\/solar\/solar-projects\/3x30.cshtml\">\r\nGeorgia Power<\/a> and the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.armyeitf.com\/index.php\/component\/content\/article\/67-news\/24-georgia-3x30-solar\">\r\nArmy<\/a> jointly released plans to install large\r\nsolar arrays at three military bases yesterday in what officials say\r\ncould be a model for other states.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe three solar arrays are scheduled to start producing power in\r\n2015 and will lead to the Army getting 18 percent of its electricity\r\nin Georgia from renewable fuels that are on-site.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe 90 total megawatts of solar electricity also will move the Army\r\n9 percent closer to meeting federal goals for renewable energy.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nAdding three 30 MW arrays would continue to boost Georgia&#8217;s rapidly\r\ngrowing solar output and would help the military meet its renewable\r\nenergy goals to become sustainable and more secure.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe move also alleviates mounting political and public pressure on\r\nGeorgia Power to remove roadblocks that some say have made it\r\ndifficult for the military to meet its federal renewable energy\r\ngoals.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nOK, that&#8217;s all good stuff.\r\nHowever, I&#8217;m missing the part about SO is going beyond what GA PSC\r\nrequired Georgia Power to do:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;From the commission standpoint, it&#8217;s a joint venture between the\r\nGeorgia Public Service Commission and the Georgia Power Co. It is a\r\npartnership,&#8221; PSC member Lauren &#8220;Bubba&#8221; McDonald said in an\r\ninterview with EnergyWire. &#8220;Georgia will be the model state.&#8221;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nAt least a couple of state utility regulators have been working with\r\nGeorgia Power for months on a program specifically to install solar\r\nat military bases. The utility will use a 90 MW self-build project\r\nthat the Georgia Public Service Commission approved in 2007 to\r\nimplement its plans.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/more-solar-by-georgia-power-ga-psc.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/BO6DF4ECUAAfZQ3.jpg:small\"><\/a>\r\nSo if that 90 MW was approved by GA PSC in 2007, how is it\r\nbeyond\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/more-solar-by-georgia-power-ga-psc.html\">\r\nthe 525 MW GA PSC required of Georgia Power last summer<\/a>?\r\nMaybe Georgia Power and GA PSC won&#8217;t count that 90MW within the 525 MW.\r\nThis could confirm that interpretation:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nMcDonald said this program is an extension of his efforts last\r\nsummer when he shepherded a proposal to have Georgia Power add 525\r\nMW of solar to the grid as part of the utility&#8217;s long-term energy\r\nplan.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nOK, that&#8217;s good.\r\nIt&#8217;s still not enough: Georgia Power should be doubling its solar\r\ngeneration every year, not just adding 17% above what it&#8217;s required.\r\nBut it&#8217;s some sort of acknowledgement that something needs to be done,\r\nand it is something Georgia Power is actually doing.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An additional 90 megawatts of solar power by Georgia Power, beyond what the GA PSC required last summer?
