\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nA major big city daily?\r\nA local newspaper of record along the proposed pipeline path?\r\nNope: the Valdosta State University student newspaper, The Spectator,\r\nhas done what its bigger newspaper colleagues have not dared:\r\noppose the Sabal Trail fracked methane pipeline and demand renewable\r\nenergy instead.\r\nWhere students lead<\/a>, maybe their elders will follow.\r\n

\r\nEditorial in The Spectator 1 May 2014 (I added the links and images),\r\n\r\nPipeline a risk to Valdosta<\/a>,\r\n

\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n“My first thought was it’s a nuclear bomb, we’re dead,”\r\nKim Krajniak said in a 1994 New York Times article. “No words\r\ncould ever tell you how frightening it was. My sliding glass door\r\nwas like an oven. People were running out in their underwear. It was\r\nbedlam. People running and falling, kids naked. I felt like an\r\nanimal running scared for my life.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nOn the morning of March 23, 1994,\r\n\r\na Texas Eastern Transmission gas\r\npipeline erupted next to an apartment complex in Edison, New Jersey<\/a>.\r\nThe chaos that ensued resulted in $25 million in damage and left 128\r\nfamilies without homes.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nNow, Texas Eastern Transmission’s parent company, Spectra Energy\r\nCorp.,\r\n\r\nwants to build a pipeline that will cut straight through\r\nValdosta’s backyard<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nSpectra Energy is engaged in joint-venture with NextEra Energy to\r\nconstruct the $3 billion Sabal Trail pipeline.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nIt goes on to mention central Florida’s Green Swamp and the\r\n\r\nFlorida[n] Aquifer<\/a>.\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n

\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n“My mom and dad taught us that we are the caretakers of our\r\nland, and I feel if we don’t protect our land — protect our\r\nwater and our ecosystem — we’re going to lose it,”\r\nRoselyn Beasley Bridges, property owner in Mitchell, Worth, Colquitt\r\nand Dougherty counties, said in an interview with the Albany Herald.\r\n“Every person in this region who turns on a faucet and gets a\r\nglass of pure, clear drinking water should thank God. And that, more\r\nthan anything, is what I feel is at stake here.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nAfter rehearsing Spectra’s \r\n“spotty safety record”<\/a> and the\r\necosystems the pipeline would cross, the Spectator summarizes:\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n“the risks are just too great”.\r\n

\r\nThe editorial concludes:\r\n

\r\nVSU students, find your voice. Write to \r\nyour local state\r\nrepresentatives<\/a>, and let them know that it is time to usher in a new\r\nage of renewable energy.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
