\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n“People would have a lot more confidence in the government\r\nif they understood it and they could see it happen,”\r\nsaid Gretchen Quarterman this morning on drive-time radio.\r\nShe used last night’s \r\nBrookhaven apartment building rezoning public hearing<\/a> in\r\nLake Park to illustrate: local landowners have property rights and\r\nthere was a lack of communication between the developers\r\nof a proposed apartment building, the Lake Park city government,\r\nand the neighbors.\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nShe also talked about jobs, including in local agriculture.\r\nFor example, she ran the\r\n\r\n2014 South Georgia Growing Local Conference<\/a>.\r\nMoney spent on local agriculture supports the local economy,\r\nnot companies far away.\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nShe talked about stewardship of resources,\r\nincluding preserving local property and environment from \r\nthe Sabal Trail natural gas pipeline.\r\nShe advocated resolutions or ordinances by local government\r\nto protect local property and safety,\r\nespecially if many local\r\ngovernments in various counties could\r\n\r\nwork together<\/a>.\r\n\r\n

\r\n<\/a>\r\n\r\nRadio host Chris Beckham reminded listeners that Gretchen already serves\r\non the appointed Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBOA) and\r\nshe reminded listeners that she has been videoing\r\nLowndes County Commission meetings for years and\r\nputting them on YouTube, and the county could do that themselves.\r\n

<\/a>\r\nShe complimented the current county government for their\r\nfirst responders and for the recent\r\nmulti-day budget review<\/a>.\r\nShe said she was glad she went to that so she would be prepared to take office,\r\nand she had a calling to serve.\r\n

\r\nChris Beckham reminded everybody\r\n\r\nLowndes County Commission District 5<\/a> is vacant because\r\nthe former incumbent John Page decided to run for Georgia State Senate and\r\nsince the terms would have overlapped he thereby vacated the seat.\r\nGretchen decided to run the next day in the resulting Special Election,\r\nwhich is a nonpartisan race on every ballot May 20th.\r\nAs soon as the election results are certified by the Board of Elections,\r\nthe winner will immediately take office.\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nYou can vote early this week and next at the Board of Elections\r\nor on May 20th at your polling place; see\r\n\r\nMy Voter Page<\/a> by the Georgia Secretary of State\r\nfor where that is and which districts you’re in for this\r\nand other races.\r\nCounty Commission District 5 is the west Superdistrict,\r\nincluding all of Hahira, Remerton, Lake Park, Clyattville, half of Dasher,\r\nand much of Valdosta.\r\nThis Special Election is, on all three ballots\r\nfor May 20th: nonpartisan, Democratic, and Republican.\r\nIt’s the very last thing on the ballot,\r\nbut definitely not the least, as one of five voting positions on the only elected body that represents all of Lowndes County.\r\n
