See also\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/lowndes-county-school-board-election.html\">school board election<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/sos.ga.gov\/index.php\/elections\/2014_qualifying_information_packet\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:200px\" src=\"http:\/\/soswebadmin.sos.state.ga.us\/admin\/uploads\/d2005c14b9778ba71fc40da987339e2e.png\"><\/a>\r\nAdditional entries in County Commission Districts 3 and 5,\r\nplus a swap and a withdrawal,\r\ncontinued the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/musical-chairs-in-local-qualifying.html\">musical chairs<\/a> in local qualifying.\r\nPlus three out of four County Commission seats up for election\r\nwill actually be decided in May, not November.\r\nAnd one state House seat and the state Senate race are hotly contested.\r\n\r\n<p>\r\nThe three County Commission seats that will be decided May 20th are:<!--more-->\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\nDistrict 2: only Republicans qualified\r\n<li>\r\nDistrict 4: only the incumbent Democrat, Demarcus Marshall, qualified\r\n<li>\r\nDistrict 5: both Democrats and Republicans qualified, but it&#8217;s\r\na special election to fill an unexpired term, so it&#8217;s actually\r\na nonpartisan race, and unless there&#8217;s a runoff the final election is May 20th,\r\nwith the winner to take office immediately upon being the election being\r\ncertified, which usually happens within a week.\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIn the remaining race, for District 3, both Republicans and Democrats qualified,\r\nso there will be a primary May 20th, but the final decision will be in the\r\ngeneral election November 4th.\r\n<p>\r\nHere&#8217;s who&#8217;s running for County Commission:\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>District 2: Scott Orenstein (R), Jody Hall (R)\r\n<li>District 3: <strike>Crawford Powell (incumbent switched to House 174)<\/strike>, Mark Wisenbaker (R), <strike>Thomas Sims (R)<\/strike>, <strike>Don Thieme (D)<\/strike>, Tom Hochschild (D)\r\n<li>District 4: Demarcus Marshall (D incumbent)\r\n<li>District 5: <strike>John Page (incumbent switched to Senate 8)<\/strike>, <strike>Roger Christie (withdrew)<\/strike>, Clay Griner (changed from District 2), Norman Bennett (former Chairman who brought us Sterling Chemical and privatized the landfill), Gretchen Quarterman (ran for Chairman last time and got 47%)\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>\r\nSee Gretchen&#8217;s writeup,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lowndesdems.org\/2014\/03\/15\/qualifying-wrap-up-lowndes-county-commission\/\">\r\nQualifying Wrap Up \u2013 Lowndes County Commission<\/a>\r\nfor details.\r\n<p>\r\nAnd let&#8217;s not forget the rest of the races:\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\nHouse 174: <strike>Ellis Black (switched to Senate 8)<\/strike>, <strike>Crawford Powell (switched from County Commission District 3)<\/strike>, Jessie Smith (D), John L. Corbett (R) \r\n<li>\r\nHouse 175: Amy Carter (R incumbent)\r\n<li>\r\nHouse 176 Jason Shaw (R incumbent)\r\n<li>\r\nHouse 177: Dexter Sharper (D incumbent)\r\n<li>\r\nSenate 8: Richard Raines (R not running again for County Commission District 2), Ellis Black (R switched from House 174), Bikram Mohanty (D ran last time and placed well), John Page (R switched from County Commission District 5).\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>\r\nBreak out the popcorn!\r\n<p>\r\nAnd seriously, folks, some of these people will represent you,\r\nand some of them will say there&#8217;s nothing you can do.\r\nWhich would you prefer?\r\n<p>\r\nAnd then there&#8217;s the Lowndes County School Board, which I would\r\ntell you about, but once again as it has been off and on for days,\r\nthe Georgia Secretary of State <a href=\"https:\/\/gvrs.sos.state.ga.us\/GAElection\/CandidateDetails\">Qualifying Candidate Information<\/a> page seems to be broken.\r\nMaybe we need some new people in the statewide elected positions\r\nwho can actually keep Georgia&#8217;s government working.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Update 31 March 2014: Withdrawals of Thomas Sims and Don Thieme from Lowndes County Commission District 3 and of Crawford Powell from House 174.
