The previous estimate was about $2\nbillion less. The plant was originally slated to go online in 2016,\nbut that deadline continues to get pushed back.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n2016 to 2024? An eight year delay?\nAnd from $22 billion to $24 billion, or 9% more?\nIt looks like Progress Energy has started down the\npath of many $billion cost overruns that\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/how-much-wind-and-solar-capacity-would-a-billion-dollars-buy.html\">\nThe Southern Company and Georgia Power already went down\n30 years ago and have already started back down again.<\/a>\nGeorgia Power customers: don&#8217;t be surprised if your rates go up more\nfor nukes that get pushed still farther into the future.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nMeanwhile, by\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/how-much-wind-and-solar-capacity-would-a-billion-dollars-buy.html\">\nJohn Hanger&#8217;s estimates,<\/a>\nan extra $1 billion would buy about 450 MW of wind power or about 330\nMW of solar power.\nSo that $2 billion expected cost rise would buy about\n\n<!--more-->\n900 MW of wind\nor 660 MW of solar.\nAnd the total $24 billion price tag would buy about 10,800 MW of wind\nor about 7,920 MW of solar power.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nMeanwhile, according to\n<a href=\"http:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/2008\/07\/15\/utilities-progress-levy-idUKN1530419120080715\">\nReuters 15 July 2008<\/a>,\nthe Levy County plant is supposed to be for\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n&#8220;two of Toshiba Corp&#8217;s (6502.T) Westinghouse 1,100 MW AP1000 reactors&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThat would be 2,200 MW total.\nI suppose PGN could argue that the sun doesn&#8217;t shine all the time nor the\nwind blow, so you can&#8217;t say you&#8217;d get 10,800 MW of wind or 7,920 MW of\nsolar power all the time.\nBut you do get solar power during the day when most power is needed,\nand offshore wind blows most of the time.\nAnd when you get factors like 3.6 times more MW from solar or 5 times from wind,\nyou have to start to wonder whether something like building a bunch of tanks to\npump water up during the day for power generation during the night\nmight be a better bet than an ever-more-costly and ever-receding nuclear plant.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Florida is already experiencing a likely future for the new Plant Vogtle nukes in Georgia: completion date pushed back, and customer charges raised.
