<\/a>\nOn the eve of Southern Company (NYSE: SO) holding its annual meeting\nof stockholders in Pine Mountain, GA., the nonprofit Green America\n\nreleased a report<\/a> today ranking the major U.S. power producer as\n“the United States’ most irresponsible utility.”\n<\/p>\n
\nTitled “Leadership We Can Live Without: The Real Corporate Social\nResponsibility Report for Southern Company,” the Green America\nanalysis assigns letter grades to seven major U.S. utilities on four\nfronts: reliance on coal; pollution; reliance on and expansion of\nnuclear power; and lobbying expenditures. Southern came in dead last\nwith straight “F” grades in all four of the categories.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\nThe PR and the report have a lot more detail, such as this:\n
\n\nClean Air Task Force data shows that Southern Company’s coal-fired\npower plants cause 1,224 deaths, 1,710 heart attacks, 20,770 asthma\nattacks, and 752 cases of chronic bronchitis per year. The total\nannual cost of all of this damage is over $9 billion.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\nHey, that’s more than the original projected cost of the new nukes!\nGeorgians, do you like trading your health for SO’s\ncoal plants<\/a>\nand its nuclear boondoggle?\n<\/p>\n
\nOr would you rather Southern Company and Georgia Power\n\n
<\/a>\nspend less for more electricity by\n\nfollowing Austin Energy and Cobb EMC into solar power,<\/a>\nplus\n\nwind off the coast<\/a>, for jobs, for energy independence, for health, and for profit?\n<\/p>\n
