\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nThe FBI has launched an investigation of the Corrections Corporation\r\nof America over the company’s running of an Idaho prison with a\r\nreputation so violent that inmates dubbed it “Gladiator School.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe Nashville, Tenn.-based CCA has operated Idaho’s largest prison\r\nfor more than a decade, but last year, CCA officials acknowledged it\r\nhad understaffed the Idaho Correctional Center by thousands of hours\r\nin violation of the state contract. CCA also said employees\r\nfalsified reports to cover up the vacancies. The announcement came\r\nafter an Associated Press investigation showed CCA sometimes listed\r\nguards as working 48 hours straight to meet minimum staffing\r\nrequirements.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe Idaho State Police was asked to investigate the company last\r\nyear but didn’t, until amid increasing political pressure, the\r\ngovernor ordered the agency to do so last month. Democratic state\r\nlawmakers asked the FBI to take up the case last month.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nThe surveillance video from the overhead cameras shows Hanni Elabed\r\nbeing beaten by a fellow inmate in an Idaho prison, managing to bang\r\non a prison guard station window, pleading for help. Behind the\r\nglass, correctional officers look on, but no one intervenes when\r\nElabed is knocked unconscious. No one steps into the cellblock when\r\nthe attacker sits down to rest, and no one stops him when he resumes\r\nthe beating.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nVideos of the attack obtained by The Associated Press show officers\r\nwatching the beating for several minutes. The footage is a key piece\r\nof evidence for critics who claim the privately run Idaho\r\nCorrectional Center uses inmate-on-inmate violence to force\r\nprisoners to snitch on their cellmates or risk being moved to\r\nextremely violent units.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nOn Tuesday, hours after the AP published the video, the top federal\r\nprosecutor in Idaho told the AP that the FBI has been investigating\r\nwhether guards violated the civil rights of inmates at the prison,\r\nwhich is run by the Corrections Corporation of America.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
