\nThe world’s worst nuclear disaster at Fukushima in Japan has had\neconomic effects on nuclear-owning power utilities.\nWhat will happen to the Southern Company\nas Georgia Power customers and U.S. taxpayers\nget tired of paying for cost overruns\n\nwhich are already almost a billion dollars?<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe German government decided to abandon nuclear power after the\nFukushima nuclear disaster last year, closing eight plants\nimmediately and shutting down the remaining nine by 2022.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nAnd closing those nuclear plants caused German electric utility\n\nE.ON to lay off up\nto 11,000 staff, to take its first quarterly loss in a decade, and to\ncut its shareholder dividend.<\/a>\nAccording to Forbes,\nE.ON\n\nin 2006 was the biggest electric utility in the world<\/a>\n\n<\/a>\n(and TEPCO, owner of the Fukushima nuclear plants, was number 6).\nIn March 2012, E.ON was\nnumber 22<\/a>.\n(TEPCO dropped from number 6 to\n\nnumber 45<\/a>.)\nSouthern Company (SO) jumped from number 16 in 2006\nto\n\nnumber 6 this year,<\/a>\nquite possibly because E.ON and TEPCO and others dropped so rapidly.\n<\/p>\n

\nHm, I wonder what Southern Company’s nukes,\n\nalready almost $1 billion over budget,<\/a>\nwill do to SO’s ranking in Forbes’ list of top utilities?\nMaybe there’s a reason\n\nMoody’s called nuclear “a bet-the-farm risk”.<\/a>\nWhat will SO do\n\nwhen this big nuclear bet goes bad?<\/a>\nAnd how big a bill do Georgia Power customers and we the taxpayers\nwant to let SO run up that we’ll get stuck with?\n<\/p>\n
