\r\nIt’s unlikely a U.S. town has any direct power over a siting decision in Canada,\r\nbut a small Michigan town made its views known anyway, because it would be affected.\r\nLocal governments affected by the Sabal Trail methane pipeline could do the same.\r\n

\r\nIn October, U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin sent a\r\nletter to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry showing their concern\r\nfor the proposed nuclear waste site.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“The placement of this nuclear waste storage facility is of\r\ngreat concern given its location near Lake Huron and the importance\r\nof the Great Lakes to tens of millions of U.S. and Canadian citizens\r\nfor drinking water, fisheries, tourism, recreation, and other\r\nindustrial and economic uses,” they wrote in the letter.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nIn passing a resolution opposing the site, Milan elected officials\r\nbrought the issue to light for the city’s residents.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nCouncilman Douglas Gilson said he was in favor of the resolution and\r\nthanked Moyer for bringing the issue before Council.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“You’re talking about our children’s future and our\r\ngrandchildren’s and their children’s future when you’re putting this\r\nstuff right next to a Great Lake,” Gilson said of the planned\r\nfacility.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nDon’t we have the same concern about an unnecessary methane pipeline\r\nright here?\r\nThe even smaller town of South Buffalo, Michigan\r\n\r\njust voted against siting a compressor station<\/a>\r\nand\r\nChamblee, Georgia voted to oppose a methane pipeline<\/a>.\r\nOther local governments could do the same.\r\n
