Quarterman @ LCC 2012-05-08"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QlpKRBhThgM&#038;feature=autoplay&#038;list=PLD66C8844F981B648&#038;playnext=19\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/i2.ytimg.com\/vi\/QlpKRBhThgM\/default.jpg\"><\/a>\n<p>\nAt a recent Lowndes County Commission meeting, I said:\n<blockquote>\nI was interested to learn two weeks ago that my neighbor\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/get-bellsouth-to-supply-dsl-on-hambrick-road-timothy-nessmith-lcc-2012-04-24.html\">\nTimothy Nessmith was interested in getting DSL<\/a> on Hambrick Road.\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nHe said you can get it as close to him as Quarterman Road.\nI can attest to that because I have 3 megabit per second DSL,\ndue to being just close enough to Bellsouth&#8217;s DSL box on Cat Creek Road,\nbut most of Quarterman Road can&#8217;t get DSL due to distance.\nThere are some other land-line possibilties, involving cables in the ground\nor wires on poles.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/the-internet-backwoods-thats-south-georgia.html\">\n<img style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   width=\"226\" height=\"267\"\nsrc=\"http:\/\/www.quarterman.com\/images\/gaspeedtest.png\"><\/a>\nThen there are wireless possibilities, including EVDO, available from Verizon,\nwith 750 kilobit per second (0.75 Mbps) wide area access from cell phone towers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nVerizon&#8217;s towers could also be used for WIFI antennas,\nfor up to 8 Mbps Internet access, over a wide scale.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThen there&#8217;s metropolitan-area Internet.\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/gigabit-internet-in-chattanooga.html\">\nChattanooga has the fastest such network, with 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps).<\/a>\nBut\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/100-broadband-municipal-networks-wheres-ours.html\">\nhundreds of communities around the country have such networks,<\/a>\nincluding (continued after\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QlpKRBhThgM&#038;feature=autoplay&#038;list=PLD66C8844F981B648&#038;playnext=19\">\nthe video)&#8230;<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"480\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QlpKRBhThgM\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">\n<small>\nInternet speed and access &mdash;John S. Quarterman\n<br>\nRegular Session, Lowndes County Commission (LCC),\n<br>\nValdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia, 8 May 2012.\n<br>\nVideo by Gretchen Quarterman for Lowndes Area Knowledge Exchange (LAKE).\n<\/small>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8230;Lafayette, Louisiana,\nBowling Green, Kentucky,\nLagrange, Georgia,\nand\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/expert-says-valdosta-lags-behind-thomasville-in-internet-speed-for-business.html\">\nThomasville, Georgia.<\/a>\nThey use it for\npublic safety,\neducation (Wiregrass Tech, VSU),\nand\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\nIt attracts new industry.\nIf you want knowledge-based industry,\nthey&#8217;re going to be expecting Internet access not just at work,\nbut at home, whereever they live.\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nOther uses include\n\n<!--more-->\nhospitals and\ntelemedicine, including in ambulances, for better survival rates.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nMy other neighbor Ashley Paulk\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/get-bellsouth-to-supply-dsl-on-hambrick-road-timothy-nessmith-lcc-2012-04-24.html\">\ntold Timothy Nessmith Internet access is a PSC issue.<\/a>\nWell, that&#8217;s partly true, but the county talks to state and federal\ngovernments all the time, about issues such as:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nroads and bridges,\nsuch as the\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4w_tEe1aKBA&#038;feature=autoplay&#038;list=PLD5EF212186C85953&#038;playnext=1\">\nLMIG funding from GDOT<\/a>\nfor\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a1r29NWg1Nk&#038;list=PLD66C8844F981B648&#038;index=13&#038;feature=plpp_video\">\na no-bid item for $60,354.32,<\/a>\n<li>\ntransportation, such as the\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NuLZezAiq7E&#038;list=PLD5EF212186C85953&#038;index=11&#038;feature=plpp_video\">\nstate Section 5311 Rural Transportation Program<\/a>,\naka\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DYJn2D_cNOM&#038;list=PLD66C8844F981B648&#038;index=14&#038;feature=plpp_video\">\nthe county&#8217;s on-call MIDS bus service,<\/a>\nfor a new total of\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/videos-lcc-2012-05-07.html\">\n$136,921<\/a>,\n<li>\npublic safety,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/03\/the-lowndes-lanier-county-ef3-tornado-noaa.html\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   width=\"204\" height=\"115\" src=\"http:\/\/www.srh.noaa.gov\/images\/tae\/events\/20120303\/LaundryBasket.jpg\"><\/a>\nfor example\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/03\/tornado-report-ashley-tye-lcc-2012-03-12.html\">\nFEMA and the National Weather Service<\/a>\nabout the\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/03\/the-lowndes-lanier-county-ef3-tornado-noaa.html\">\nEF2 tornado in April.<\/a>,\n<li>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gd_Lvsw-iEs&#038;list=PLD5EF212186C85953&#038;index=9&#038;feature=plpp_video\">\ntax credits from the federal government<\/a>\nfor\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GbQ0aLVE84A&#038;list=PLD66C8844F981B648&#038;index=12&#038;feature=plpp_video\">\napartments,<\/a>\n<li>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/10\/chip-grant-twice-ashley-paulk-broke-the-tie-lcc-27-september-2011.html\">\nhousing grants,<\/a>\n<li>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/02\/i-am-very-concerned-about-a-community-that-would-purchase-an-armored-vehicle-over-weather-radios-sharon-flory.html\">\ntanks vs. emergency vehicles,<\/a>\n<li>\nand other issues.\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nLowndes County could talk to the PSC and the legislature\nabout Internet access.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\nIn the community discussions are re-opening\nabout Internet access including municipal or county-wide access.\nThese involve some large players&#8230;\nWhat I would like to recommend is that the county be involved in that.\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetizen.com\/node\/56484\"> <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b01630529c9ae970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b01630529c9ae970d-pi.jpg\"   \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nChairman Paulk raised his finger after 4 minutes.\nAs I told him later, I was almost done, anyway.\nI think the community should take time to come up with ways\nto provide community-wide access,\nranging from getting the incumbent Internet providers\nto provide real competitive service,\nto installing county-wide municipal Internet service ourselves.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"At a recent Lowndes County Commission meeting, I said: I was interested to learn two weeks ago that my neighbor Timothy Nessmith was interested in getting DSL on Hambrick Road.
