The<br \/>\narea is too vast.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHe added, &ldquo;We&#8217;re living on top of a bomb.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nMaybe it&#8217;s not that bad<!--more--> around the<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/epa-ga-epd-and-southeast-health-in-waycross-about-seven-out-superfund-epa-2013-11-14.html\"><br \/>\nCSX railyard in Waycross, near the Seven Out Superfund site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/u-s-epa-ga-dnr-ga-health-dept-and-landfill-in-lowndes-county-epa-2013-11-14.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3815\/9633071490_84a550ce00_n.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nGarbage is a perennial problem in Italy as landfills run out of<br \/>\nspace, setting off periodic crises in cities like Rome and Naples.<br \/>\nBut the land of the Camorra, stretching from the Tyrrhenian Sea to<br \/>\nthe Apennine foothills, is a particularly vivid tableau of ruined<br \/>\nbeauty.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nHere in Lowndes County we&#8217;ve only got two closed landfills<br \/>\nand<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/u-s-epa-ga-dnr-ga-health-dept-and-landfill-in-lowndes-county-epa-2013-11-14.html\"><br \/>\none open in an aquifer recharge zone that has accepted<br \/>\nPCBs, coal ash, and wastewater from Seven Out<\/a>, plus the county&#8217;s<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/videos-trucks-and-row-crops-lcc-2013-04-23.html\"><br \/>\nLand Application Site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/contact\/counties-and-cities\/georgia-counties-and-cities\/lowndes-county-georgia\/\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3690\/10335955236_69f4e7ea47_m.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nAnd a Texas company that wants to run a yard-wide methane pipeline<br \/>\non a hundred-foot gouge through the county&#8217;s closed landfill.<br \/>\nA company with a long list of<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/hazards\/spectra-safety-violations\/\"><br \/>\nsafety violations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\nGarbage is strewn along highways, tossed beneath overpasses or<br \/>\ndumped atop irrigation canals. Rats search for food amid discarded<br \/>\nsheets of asbestos, broken computer screens and empty paint cans.<br \/>\nPlumes of black smoke often rise, the entrails of trash illegally<br \/>\nburned from distant hillsides or abandoned fields.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanonc\/article\/PIIS147020450401561X\/fulltext\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanonc\/article\/PIIS147020450401561X\/images?imageId=fx1&#038;sectionType=lightBlue&#038;hasDownloadImagesLink=true\"><\/a><br \/>\nThe landscape is a result of decades of secret dealings between<br \/>\nmanufacturers in Italy and beyond, who sought to avoid the high<br \/>\ncosts of legally disposing of hazardous waste, and the Camorra, one<br \/>\nof Italy&#8217;s three main mafia organizations, which saw the potential<br \/>\nto make huge profits by disposing of it illegally.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nWell, the Lowndes County&#8217;s<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/exclusive-franchise-for-solid-waste-collection-services-lcc-2012-12-11.html\"><br \/>\nExclusive Franchise for Solid Waste Collection Services<\/a><br \/>\nisn&#8217;t entirely secret; we do have through an open records request<br \/>\na copy of the contract.<br \/>\nAlthough Commissioners<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/adjourn-into-trash-excuses-lcc-2013-06-11.html\"><br \/>\noffer only feeble excuses for it<\/a><br \/>\nand<br \/>\nthe county continues to<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/ads-fails-to-recycle-appeals-dss-ruling-anyway.html\"><br \/>\nsue a local garbage disposal business<\/a><br \/>\neven though<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/ads-fails-to-recycle-appeals-dss-ruling-anyway.html\"><br \/>\nthe exclusive franchisee fails to recycle<\/a><br \/>\nand before that<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/ads-included-household-trash-in-their-recyclded-items-tim-carroll.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:200px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.valdostacity.com\/Modules\/ShowImage.aspx?imageid=544\"><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/ads-included-household-trash-in-their-recyclded-items-tim-carroll.html\"><br \/>\nincluded household trash in their recycled items<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut this part sure seems familiar:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\n&ldquo;The mafia has made money on the garbage,&rdquo; said Ciro<br \/>\nTufano, 44, an accountant who has spent two decades pushing<br \/>\nofficials to clean up a toxic site near his home. &ldquo;Politicians<br \/>\nmust have been aware, but they don&#8217;t care. Nobody was tracking this<br \/>\ntrail of garbage.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/12\/ads-included-household-trash-in-their-recyclded-items-tim-carroll.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:200px;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_Jkecxejidos\/THs3H1gkB5I\/AAAAAAAACks\/ymN5sDrINnE\/s400\/diaper-day144-aug29.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nFew if any local politicians, as near as I can tell after asking several<br \/>\nof them to do so, are tracking what goes into the landfill<br \/>\nor what gets dumped into woods or burned because of the county&#8217;s<br \/>\nExclusive Franchise.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\nThe acreage where waste is buried is relatively small, he said, but<br \/>\nthe risks are significantly higher because the dump sites are spread<br \/>\nacross such a large area.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;It flows all over the place,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;You can<br \/>\nbe a farmer who is unwittingly irrigating your land with polluted<br \/>\nwater.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/landfill-is-in-aquifer-recharge-zone.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7366\/9643841459_29c6fba682_m.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nCould this happen with<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/landfill-is-in-aquifer-recharge-zone.html\"><br \/>\na landfill in an aquifer recharge zone<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>\nBut not to worry:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\n&ldquo;We&#8217;re polluting our own house and our own land,&rdquo; the<br \/>\nmobster said. &ldquo;What are we going to drink?&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;You idiot,&rdquo; the boss replied. &ldquo;We&#8217;ll drink<br \/>\nmineral water.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThat&#8217;s it!<br \/>\nWe&#8217;ll all drink mineral water.<\/p>\n<p>\n -jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They call it the Triangle of Death because of the cancer clusters.
