For example, at $89 per\r\nmonth on average, U.S. residents pay more for broadband than\r\nresidents in 57 other countries including Canada, Bulgaria, Colombia\r\nand the U.K. That&#8217;s right, the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/point-topic.com\/free-analysis\/broadband-tariff-country-scorecard-q4-2013\/\">\r\nU.S. ranks 58 out of 90 countries<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2014\/01\/16\/two-charts-that-show-how-crappy-u-s-broadband-is\/?\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/gigaom2.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/longchart.png?w=708\"><\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nThe research, from research firm Point Topic concludes that the\r\nhigher broadband prices are &ldquo;caused by lower investment in\r\ninfrastructure as well as lower take-up which prevents them from\r\nbenefiting from economies of scale.&rdquo; To get the above data the\r\nfirm compared the prices paid for residential broadband and includes\r\nstandalone and bundled services offered over DSL, fiber and cable\r\nbroadband in the fourth quarter of 2013.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nPer-country comparisons like this are hard to act on, but even at the\r\ncountry level\r\nwe know<!--more--> many things <em>not<\/em> to do, including\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/01\/deep-divisions-between-u-s-and-asian-nations-in-tpp-wikileaks.html\">the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)<\/a>\r\nthat would make it even easier for the telco and cableco incumbents\r\nto keep gouging us for inferior product.\r\nSusan Crawford has previously pointed out\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/u-s-broadband-among-most-expensive-worldwide-why.html\">\r\nsome other things we can do<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nPoint Topic does have\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/point-topic.com\/free-analysis\/broadband-tariff-country-scorecard-q4-2013\/\">some more detail<\/a>, such as that DSL is the most expensive\r\nway to provide Internet service.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/rural-broadband-economics-slides.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7393\/10036022214_a877058aff_n.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nWe already know that\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/rural-broadband-economics-slides.html\">\r\nrural broadband adoption improves rural economic health<\/a>.\r\nThat&#8217;s causality.\r\nAnd we also know\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/broadband-fiber-correlates-with-increased-house-prices.html\">\r\nBroadband fiber correlates with increased house prices<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/coverage-t-vs-vz-for-4g-lte.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7458\/9306608021_05fb08c4ba_n.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nWe could do something about that, such as try to attract Google Fiber,\r\nwhich caused <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/12\/11\/5200250\/at-t-beats-google-to-high-speed-fiber-in-austin\">\r\nAT&amp;T to suddenly discover how to do high speed Internet in Austin, Texas<\/a>.\r\nOr propose to do metropolitan-area 4G LTE, which might get\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/coverage-t-vs-vz-for-4g-lte.html\">\r\nVZ and T<\/a>\r\noff their duffs for affordable pricing.\r\n<p>\r\nOh, wait, I forgot:\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/open-house-at-mildred-hunter-on-common-community-vision-vlmpo-2013-10-23.html\">\r\n&#8220;We have broadband,&#8221;<\/a>\r\nasserted County Chairman Bill Slaughter.\r\nSo it&#8217;s OK to be an Internet backwater in a country that&#8217;s\r\n#58 out of 90 in broadband cost.\r\nAll righty, then.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Stacey Higginbotham wrote for GigaOm 16 January 2014, Two charts that show how crappy U.S. broadband is, Despite the deployments of a few gigabit networks by Google and the spread of faster cable technology, U.S. broadband is falling behind.
