\r\n\r\n\"Stop\r\n<\/a>\r\nThe biggest TPP story this year was the publication by WikiLeaks<\/a>\r\nin November of the chapter titled “Intellectual Property.” Unfortunately,\r\nits contents confirmed many of our worst fears: from \r\nratcheting up copyright term lengths<\/a>\r\naround the world, to \r\nboxing in fair use<\/a>, to mandating a draconian legal regime around DRM software<\/a>, section\r\nafter section contained clauses plucked from corporate wishlists and\r\nsnubbed the public interest altogether.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nAnd then there’s\r\n\r\nTed Poe’s House Subcommittee pushing TPP for LNG exports that would propel\r\n“natural” fracked gas pipelines<\/a>\r\nsuch as Spectra Energy’s Sabal Transmission gas pipe\r\nthrough private property and\r\n\r\npublic rivers and watersheds<\/a> and\r\n\r\naquifers<\/a>.\r\n

\r\nHere’s what’s up next:\r\n

\r\n

\r\nIn the U.S., opposition has focused on the Obama administrations \r\ncalls for Congress to grant “fast track authority,”<\/a>\r\nthus waiving its constitutional role of reviewing international\r\nagreements. If it passes fast track, Congress would instead be limited to\r\na single yes-or-no vote. Under normal circumstances that’s dangerous. But\r\nin a case where the public (and even Congressional staffers) haven’t been\r\nallowed to read the agreement at all yet, that’s reckless behavior.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nWe’ve set up \r\na tool to allow people in the U.S. to contact their legislators<\/a>\r\n asking them to oppose fast track authority for TPP, and people have already used it to send tens of thousands of letters. \r\nYou can use it to send a letter today<\/a>. Lawmakers seem to be taking notice: in the past few months, bipartisan letters from House Republicans and Democrats have \r\nfirmly rejected the lack of transparency around the agreement<\/a>,\r\ncasting serious doubt on the possibility of fast track authority.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
