\r\nNo safe, permanent solution has yet been found anywhere in the\r\nworld—and may never be found—for the nuclear waste\r\nproblem. In the U.S., the only identified and flawed high-level\r\nradioactive waste deep repository site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada has\r\nbeen canceled. Beyond Nuclear advocates for an end to the production\r\nof nuclear waste and for securing the existing reactor waste in\r\nhardened on-site storage.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nThe NRC, by court order, has been required to gather public input\r\nregarding a Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS) regarding\r\nthe storage of nuclear waste that is grossly inadequate and leaves\r\nover 150 million Americans who live within 50 miles of a nuclear\r\npower plant at risk.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe NRC has declared that it would only be a SMALL risk to the\r\nenvironment and communities near nuclear power plants to store\r\nnuclear waste on-site for 60 years, 160 years or even INDEFINITELY\r\nif no permanent repository is established….\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nAnd NRC’s oversight committee is the\r\n\r\nSubcommittee on Energy and Power<\/a>\r\nof the\r\n\r\nEnergy and Commerce Committee<\/a>,\r\nwhich just held a hearing 12 December 2013 on\r\n\r\nOversight of NRC Management and the Need for Legislative Reform<\/a>.\r\n
