Heather Duncan reported for the Macon Telegraph, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macon.com\/2012\/07\/08\/2088585\/first-big-ga-power-solar-project.html\"> First big Ga. Power solar project comes online in Upson<\/a>. Yay! Georgia Power and its parent the Southern Company (SO) will have a hard time now saying solar power doesn&#8217;t work in Georgia. But let&#8217;s compare the megawatts and put that in perspective.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Solar Megawatts\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/7538985942\/sizes\/m\/\"> <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b01761649c7a2970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b01761649c7a2970c-pi.jpg\"  alt=\"Solar Megawatts\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nThat&#8217;s right: we could have had 3,000 times as much solar production by now.\nAll SO would have to do\n\n<!--more-->\nwould be to look at what Cobb EMC and Austin Energy have done,\nor even what SO itself is doing in Nevada.\nOr at what Germany, world leader in solar power, a thousand miles north of us,\nis doing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 megawatt will be produced by the Upson plant. <\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/04\/private-capital-funding-100-acre-10-mw-solar-farm-with-customer-cobb-emc.html\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b01761649c7a9970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b01761649c7a9970c-pi.jpg\"   width=\"130\" height=\"87\"  \/><\/a> 20 MW will be produced by <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/04\/were-just-ripe-for-solar-power-cobb-emc.html\"> Cobb EMC&#8217;s Davisboro<\/a> solar plant, funded by private capital. <\/li>\n<li>20 MW is produced <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/southern-company-deploying-solar-in-nevada-and-new-mexico-but-not-georgia.html\"> in Nevada by the Apex Solar Project<\/a> that SO bought. <\/li>\n<li>30 MW is generated near Austin, Texas, <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/03\/30-megawatt-solar-plant-opens-near-austin.html\"> by the Webberville plant Austin Energy turned on<\/a> at the beginning of this year. <\/li>\n<li>50 MW of solar energy is what the Georgia PSC required Georgia Power to buy. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/06\/plant-vogtle-is-why-georgia-is-not-a-leader-in-solar-power-today-1.html\"> <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b016766fbbfb1970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b016766fbbfb1970b-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>330 MW of solar power is how much <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/how-much-wind-and-solar-capacity-would-a-billion-dollars-buy.html\"> Southern Company could have built with just the $913 million cost overrun<\/a> so far at the new nukes at Plant Vogtle. <\/li>\n<li>2,200 MW is how much power <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/06\/the-solar-train-is-leaving-the-station-but-the-nuclear-buggywhip-is-in-the-way.html\"> the two new nukes at Plant Vogtle<\/a> are supposed to produce (if they ever come online). <\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/06\/the-solar-train-is-leaving-the-station-but-the-nuclear-buggywhip-is-in-the-way.html\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b01761649c7af970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b01761649c7af970c-pi.gif\"   width=\"178\" height=\"98\"  \/><\/a> 2,400 MW is  <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/06\/plant-vogtle-is-why-georgia-is-not-a-leader-in-solar-power-today-1.html\"> the Georgia equivalent per population<\/a> of the 20 gigawatts (20,000 MW) Germany, the world leader in solar power, has deployed. <\/li>\n<li>3,000 MW (3 gigawatts) is how much <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/06\/plant-vogtle-is-why-georgia-is-not-a-leader-in-solar-power-today-1.html\"> Southern Company could have built with the $8.3 billion in loans<\/a> the federal government has guaranteed for Plant Vogtle. <\/li>\n<li>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/in-georgia-competitive-is-not-for-you.html\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b016766d856cd970b-pi.jpg\" width=\"167\" height=\"109\"><\/a>\n3,200 MW is how much <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/06\/the-solar-train-is-leaving-the-station-but-the-nuclear-buggywhip-is-in-the-way.html\"> new solar capacity will be installed this year in the U.S.<\/a> Mostly not in Georgia, because <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/06\/plant-vogtle-is-why-georgia-is-not-a-leader-in-solar-power-today-1.html\"> Georgia Power and Southern Company are wasting the money on Plant Vogtle<\/a> while <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/in-georgia-competitive-is-not-for-you.html\"> actively preventing the rest of us from deploying as much solar as we could.<\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember: Georgia Power just deployed 1 MW of solar power, when we could have had 3,000 MW by now. Does that seem right to you?<\/p>\n<p>Especially when <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/nuclear-and-coal-burning-water-solar-doesnt.html\"> nuclear plants guzzle water and solar does not?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/03\/separate-cwip-payments-to-georgia-power-wace-call-for-action.html\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b01761649c7b0970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b01761649c7b0970c-pi.jpg\"   width=\"112\" height=\"112\"  \/><\/a> Maybe it&#8217;s time to do something about it.
