\r\nSAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 5, 2013 \/PRNewswire\/ — SunPower Corp.\r\n(NASDAQ: SPWR) today announced that it is designing and building\r\nhigh efficiency SunPower solar power systems for 16 schools in the\r\nOakland Unified School District (OUSD) in Oakland, Calif. Once\r\ncompleted in 2014, the district estimates it will reduce electricity\r\ncosts at those facilities by 46 percent.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n“Our contract with SunPower will enable Oakland Unified School\r\nDistrict to maximize our use of clean renewable energy, dramatically\r\nreduce utility expenses, and use the savings to enhance academic\r\nprograms,” said OUSD Superintendent Dr. Gary Yee. “We will also have\r\nthe opportunity to take advantage of linked learning initiatives\r\nsuch as the successful SunPower Solar Academy, which integrates real\r\nworld work experience with rigorous academic programs to inspire\r\nstudents while preparing them for college and careers.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nSunPower is installing 3.6 megawatts of systems at the 16 schools,\r\nusing SunPower solar panels, the most efficient and reliable panels\r\non the market today. The systems include rooftop solar arrays and\r\nsolar shade structures in school parking lots, which take advantage\r\nof underutilized space and provide needed shade.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“Oakland Unified School District can rely on its SunPower solar\r\nsystems to deliver guaranteed performance for the next 25 years or\r\nmore,” said Howard Wenger, SunPower president, regions. “SunPower\r\nworks with school districts across California to reduce operating\r\ncosts and repurpose the savings to the classroom. \r\nAccording to estimates provided by the\r\n\r\nU.S. Environmental Protection\r\nAgency<\/a>, OUSD solar power systems will avoid production of\r\napproximately 80,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the next\r\n30 years, the equivalent of removing 15,210 cars from California’s\r\nroads.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
