Moreover, state and local politicians beyond the\n\u2018Beltway bubble\u2019 for the first time in many decades are responding\nto this sea change in public opinion, even if their colleagues in\nWashington are not. From Rhode Island to Texas, from New York City\nto Chicago, lawmakers are finally acknowledging that being pro-pot\nreform equals votes. The question is: Why isn&#39;t Washington getting\nthe message?\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nHow much change in public opinion?\n<\/p>\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nOver the past 10 years, there has been a seismic shift in public\nopinion, with every single demographic polled by Gallup steadily\nshowing year-to-year increased support for cannabis liberalization.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nPolling data published in May by the well-respected firm Rasmussen\nReports is even more favorable. Rasmussen reported that 56 percent\nof Americans support &quot;legalizing marijuana and regulating it like\nalcohol or cigarettes&quot; while only 34 percent oppose the idea. Every\nage group polled, including those age 65 and older, favored the\nplant&#39;s legalization over its continued criminalization.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nRasmussen&#39;s 56% is even higher than\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/150149\/record-high-americans-favor-legalizing-marijuana.aspx\">\nGallup&#39;s 50% of last year.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Why are we still arresting people for pot?
