\nFDR had become known in utility circles as a \u201cdangerous\nman\u201d for advocating state ownership of power projects and\ndenouncing the \u201csins of wildcat public-utility\noperators\u201d and the \u201cInsull monstrosity\u201d with\ninsinuations that all utilities were guilty of betraying the\npublic's trust. He also proclaimed the rights of any community\nunhappy with its service to take over private utility operations and\ndevelop their own power sites\u2014a \u201cbirch rod in the\ncupboard\u201d to be used when good service was not provided by\nprivate companies.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nImagine that,\ngenerating your own community power!\nImagine it, but you can't do it.\nSouthern Company and Georgia Power fixed that in the\n\n1973 Georgia Territorial Electric Service Act.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhat you won't see in the movie or read about in the book, Big Bets,\nis much about the\n\nbet-the-farm risk of nuclear power (bond-rater Moody's phrase)<\/a>,\nor\n\nhow much water nuclear uses,<\/a>\nor\n\nthe profit opportunity of renewable energy such as solar and wind power.<\/a>\n\n<\/a>\nYou can see some shareholders ask SO CEO Thomas A. Fanning about\nsome of those things in\n\nthese videos from the shareholder meeting back in May.<\/a>\nIf you run into him at the movie premiere, maybe you can check in\nwith him on whether any of his answers have evolved, for example,\ndoes he still think SO won't get to solar or wind power this decade?\nOr \nmaybe you’d like to ask Southern Company some questions online.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n
