\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nJust a few cracks a couple of years ago turned into a 90 foot wide\r\nand 60 foot deep sinkhole Thursday.\r\nAt least six houses affected in north Florida,\r\nabove the same Floridan Aquifer that produces sinkholes here in south Georgia.\r\nHere in Lowndes County Michael McCormick has more than a few cracks:\r\nhe has a sinkhole in his garage.\r\nWill Lowndes County do something before we wake up to news of\r\nman’s house fell into a sinkhole overnight?\r\n

\r\nSix other homes have been evacuated as a precaution and Duke Energy has shut down power to the area.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nA growing sinkhole in Florida has swallowed at least one home,\r\ncaused another to begin collapsing and forced at least six homes to\r\nbe evacuated.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe sinkhole began opening in a neighborhood just north of downtown\r\nDunedin, Fla., near Tampa, early this morning, according to ABC News\r\naffiliate WFTS-TV in Tampa.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nBy 7 a.m., the sinkhole was estimated at 80 feet wide and 40 feet\r\ndeep, and still expanding, Dunedin Deputy Fire Chief Tripp Barrs\r\ntold WFTS.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n<\/a>\r\nCurious how this happens just after a freeze Wednesday night.\r\nRemember how\r\n\r\nonly a few years ago Florida news was pretty clear<\/a>\r\nabout massive pumping from the aquifer can cause sinkholes,\r\nand to spray strawberries for a freeze occured shortly before\r\na man fell into a sinkhole in his bedroom last March?\r\n

\r\nOfficials say it will take 12,000 cubic yards — 600 dump\r\ntrucks — to fill the hole once the homes are leveled.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nCrews will work as long as there is daylight, then continue the\r\nprocess on Saturday.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nMeanwhile, cracks have appeared in a total of five homes in the\r\nneighborhood.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nThat’s more than a crack\r\n\r\nunder Michael McCormick’s garage<\/a> in Lowndes County,\r\nonly a mile or so from a Lowndes County well that went in shortly\r\nbefore the sinkhole appeared.\r\nWill Lowndes County do something about that, or will we wake up\r\none morning to “house fell into sinkhole in Lowndes County”?\r\nWe already had the\r\n\r\nSnake Nation Road sinkhole<\/a>\r\nthat cost the county at least $430,000 to reroute the road after it\r\nfailed to fill in the sinkhole.\r\nWhat will a lack of prevention on the part of Lowndes County\r\ndo to\r\n\r\nreal estate values<\/a>?\r\n
