{"id":66,"date":"2013-03-01T15:43:41","date_gmt":"2013-03-01T20:43:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/from-15-to-19-months-late-plant-vogtle-nukes.html"},"modified":"2013-03-01T15:43:41","modified_gmt":"2013-03-01T20:43:41","slug":"from-15-to-19-months-late-plant-vogtle-nukes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/from-15-to-19-months-late-plant-vogtle-nukes.html","title":{"rendered":"From 15 to 19 months late: Plant Vogtle nukes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nSurprise!\nThe already-billing but not-built new nukes at Plant Vogtle\nare going to be even later and cost even more.\nIn December they were to be\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/15-month-delay-for-new-plant-vogtle-nukes-state-inspector-at-psc.html\">15 months late<\/a>;\nnow it&#8217;s 19 months late,\nand the cost overrun expected is $740 million.\nHistory is repeating itself from\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/original-nuclear-plant-vogtle-cost-overruns.html\">\nthe last time Southern Company\nand Georgia Power built nukes on the Savannah River.<\/a>\nHow about we pass\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/02\/hb-267-financing-costs-construction-of-nuclear-generating-plant.html\">\nHB 267<\/a> to stop Georgia Power from charging that cost overrun to customers?\n<\/p>\n<p>\nKristi Swartz wrote for the AJC yesterday,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/business\/vogtle-nuclear-project-to-take-longer-cost-more\/nWc9H\/\">\nVogtle nuclear project to take longer, cost more<\/a>,\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nGeorgia Power&#8217;s Plant Vogtle nuclear expansion project will take\nabout 19 months longer to complete than originally expected and cost\nabout $740 million more than originally thought, the company said\nThursday.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a title=\"Joseph A. \u201cBuzz\u201d Miller, Executive Vice President \u2013 Nuclear Development Southern Nuclear Operating Company\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nuclearinfrastructure.org\/summit2010agenda.php\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d41642a21970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d41642a21970c-pi.jpg\"  alt=\"Joseph A. \u201cBuzz\u201d Miller, Executive Vice President \u2013 Nuclear Development Southern Nuclear Operating Company\"  \/><\/a>\nGeorgia Power said its share of the estimated $14 billion project\nwill rise to $6.85 billion, up from $6.11 billion, because of\nincreased capital costs and additional financing costs. Customers,\nwho have been paying the financing costs since 2011, now will pay\nthem for a longer period of time.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nAnd the amount Georgia Power customers have to pay\nfor\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/southern-companys-three-legged-nuclear-regulatory-capture-stool.html\">\nConstruction Work in Progress (CWIP)<\/a> keeps\nratchetting up:\n<\/p>\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nCustomers started paying Vogtle&#8217;s financing costs as part of a\ncontroversial nuclear fee approved by state lawmakers. The fee\nstarted at $3.88 in 2011, then rose to $4.26 the following year.\nNow, the fee has increased to $5.11 and will continue to climb each\nyear until the reactors start producing electricity, which is now\nscheduled for the end of 2017 and 2018. At that point, the financing\ncosts will be replaced by operating and capital, or construction,\ncosts.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nOr we could just call off the project and get on with real renewable\nsolar and wind energy.\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/02\/renewable-energy-much-needed-in-georgia-john-s-quarterman.html\">\nGoogle already spent $1 billion on solar and wind and got\nalmost as much new power as both new nukes are supposed to produce.<\/a>\nWhy should Georgia continue wasting time and money on 1980s technology\nwhen we have less expensive and faster to install\n21st century sun and wind power ready to deploy?\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Surprise!
