\r\n\r\nAlbert Einstein once said that “the world will not be destroyed by\r\nthose who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing\r\nanything.” This philosophy can be applied to countless social and\r\npolitical issues and speaks of the dangers of apathy. Add to this\r\nsituation a lack of information and our society is truly in danger,\r\nas companies like SPECTRA Energy not only count on our apathy, but\r\nwill also try to hoodwink us.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n<\/a>\r\n\r\nThe Sabal Trail Pipeline currently discussed in our community is\r\n\r\nreally part of a larger story<\/a>, a process known as hydraulic\r\nfracturing, or fracking. Fracking allows companies like Halliburton\r\nto free oil and gas trapped in geologic formations, but in a fashion\r\nthat is extremely dangerous to our environment (especially\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\ngroundwater aquifers) and human health. Exempt from the Clean Air\r\nAct, the Clean Water Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act, fracking\r\nhas created countless problems for communities from Pennsylvania to\r\nTexas, and\r\n\r\nmay soon be coming to north Georgia<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\nThe gas pipeline under discussion is literally a tentacle\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n of this\r\nfracking industry. Now you must know that SPECTRA Energy, the\r\ncompany behind this project, has\r\n\r\na recorded history of problems and environmental violations<\/a>.\r\nSince 2006, SPECTRA Energy has made the\r\nheadlines in a number of states with\r\n21 incidents that have resulted in more than $8 million in property damage<\/a>. Thus\r\n\r\nresidents of Lowndes County have every reason to be alarmed<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nGas pipelines are not as safe as SPECTRA Energy would have us\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nbelieve. Just a few weeks ago\r\n\r\nthe explosion of a natural gas pipeline in Oklahoma made the headlines<\/a>,\r\nand thankfully no one was\r\nhurt. Companies like SPECTRA Energy also will not hesitate to claim\r\neminent domain, giving them the “right” to build a gas pipeline\r\nanywhere they want, with or without the consent of land owners. Add\r\nto this picture the likelihood that property values will be affected\r\nby the construction of a natural gas pipeline, and it is no surprise\r\nthat landowners in Lowndes County and elsewhere are extremely\r\nconcerned.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
