The 19.9 MW Gemasolar concentrated solar power plant in Spain&#8217;s Andalucia province has two tanks of molten salt (MSES) that store heat energy generated throughout the day. Unlike normal plants that have less thermal storage or none at all, this stored energy enables Torresol to satisfy peak summer energy demand long after sunset.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So we already know how to store solar power, even without\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/invent-batteries-to-the-price-point-of-the-electricity-market-donald-sadoway.html\">\ndeveloping better batteries.<\/a>\nThere&#8217;s more in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stumbleupon.com\/su\/17cLrk\/inhabitat.com\/video-gemasolar-plant-in-spain-is-the-worlds-first-24hr-solar-plant\/\"> article.<\/a> About <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stumbleupon.com\/su\/17cLrk\/inhabitat.com\/video-gemasolar-plant-in-spain-is-the-worlds-first-24hr-solar-plant\/\"> that plant:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>Characteristics of Gemasolar:\n<ul>\n<li> Rated electrical power: 19.9 MW <\/li>\n<li> Net electrical production expected: 110 GWh\/year <\/li>\n<li> Solar field: 2,650 heliostats on 185 hectares <\/li>\n<li> Heat storage system: the molten salt storage tank permits independent electrical generation for up to 15 hours without any solar feed. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>185 hectares is about 457 acres, or about one VLCIA industrial park.<\/p>\n<p>Seville, Spain, is about 37 degrees north latitude. We&#8217;re at about 31 degrees. In other words, Seville is about 360 miles north of us. And we get about the same amount of sun as Seville does.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenrhinoenergy.com\/solar\/radiation\/empiricalevidence.php\"> <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017616caae23970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017616caae23970c-pi.jpg\"   width=\"500\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The average insolation (amount of sunlight falling on the surface) in Seville, Spain is about the same as in Valdosta, Georgia: about 4.85 kWh\/m2 per day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/georgia-temperatures-above-100-degrees.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   width=\"100\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b01676809c328970b-pi.jpg\"><\/a>\nHere&#8217;s a month-by-month comparison using <a href=\"http:\/\/solarelectricityhandbook.com\/solar-irradiance.html\"> Solar Electricity Handbook 2012 Edition<\/a>. They haven&#8217;t heard of Valdosta, so I used Macon.
