\r\nBad news from Britain.\r\nLet’s hope U.S. NRC doesn’t take this as a precedent.\r\n

\r\nThe Telegraph, today,\r\n\r\nChinese companies to buy big stake in next generation of British nuclear power<\/a>,\r\n

\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nGeorge Osborne, the Chancellor, has announced that the UK will allow\r\nChinese companies to take a stake in British nuclear power plants.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe decision could lead to China taking a future majority\r\nstake—and even be allowed to own up to 100 pc—in the\r\ndevelopment of the next generation of British nuclear power.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nMr Osborne made the announcement on Thursday the last day of a\r\nweek-long trade visit to China after a visit to Taishan nuclear\r\npower station on the coast near Hong Kong.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nTaishan is a collaboration between French energy company EDF and the\r\nChina General Nuclear Power Company.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nEDF is at the heart of UK Government hopes for developing new\r\nBritish nuclear capacity. Negotiations on a deal to build a new\r\nplant at Hinkley Point in Somerset have reached the critical stage,\r\nthough it does not come under this new majority-stake arrangement.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nEDF is the French nuclear company that\r\n\r\nsupposedly has exited nuclear power in the U.S.<\/a>,\r\nalthough\r\n\r\nU.S. NRC continues a process that may allow more foreign nuke ownership<\/a>\r\nincluding for EDF at Calvert Cliffs in Maryland.\r\n

\r\n

\r\nMr Davey said last weekend that the Government is “extremely\r\nclose” to finalising terms for the \u00a314bn programme to build\r\ntwin nuclear plants at Hinkley Point, Somerset.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe Government was thought to be on the verge of completing a\r\nheavily-subsidised agreement to revive nuclear power development in\r\nBritain via a deal with state-owned French and Chinese companies.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nHe insisted there was no direct state aid in the package being\r\nnegotiated with EDF and China General Nuclear.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nMaybe Brussels will have more sense:\r\n

\r\n

\r\nThe Government could, however, face difficulties on the subsidy\r\nissue when it seeks clearance from Brussels for the Hinkley deal.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nEU regulations bar direct state aid. Moves to relax the rules by\r\nintroducing guidelines have been blocked by France, Germany and\r\nother states . The Government hopes the Hinkley deal will provide\r\nthe framework for other nuclear power projects under discussion.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nYep, we’re down to depending on Brussells and the NRC.\r\nPretty sad.\r\nMaybe we should do something about that.\r\n
