\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nGeorgia’s two nuclear sites got more than a safety violation a month\r\nover a dozen years, and now the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)\r\nis shut down.\r\nMaybe we need power sources that don’t need so much safety inspection,\r\nlike solar and wind and efficiency and conservation.\r\n

\r\nAP wrote yesterday,\r\n\r\n166 violations issued at Ga. nuclear power plants<\/a>,\r\n

\r\n

\r\nA congressional study expected to be released later this month shows\r\nthat two nuclear power plants in Georgia were issued 166 safety\r\nviolations between 2000 and 2012.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nThe unreleased Government Accountability Office report obtained by\r\nthe Associated Press shows that Plant Hatch in Baxley was issued 90\r\nsafety violations during the time period. According to the report,\r\nthree of the violations were higher-level offenses.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nAccording to the report, Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro was also issued\r\n75 safety violations between 2000 and 2012.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nDespite our best hopes, the NRC on Thursday will be joining the rest\r\nof the federal government in shutting down due to a lapse in\r\nappropriations. I believe we all share a deep disappointment that\r\nthis action has become necessary.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nBy using “carryover” funds, we’ve been able to stay\r\nopen, but those funds have now been depleted. Wednesday is the last\r\nfull day that the NRC will be operating normally until we receive an\r\nappropriation. Beginning on Thursday, we will not conduct\r\nnon-emergency reactor licensing, reactor license renewal amendments,\r\nemergency preparedness exercises, reviews of design certifications\r\nor rulemaking and regulatory guidance.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nSo Plant Hatch, same design as Fukushima, runs without oversight.\r\nPlant Vogtle, too.\r\nIf they were solar plants, or even better distributed rooftop solar,\r\nnobody would need to constantly inspect them to make sure they\r\ndidn’t leak radioactivity or melt down or explode.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
