Beyond basic reading and math, respondents\r\nwere tested on activities such as calculating mileage reimbursement\r\ndue to a salesman, sorting email and comparing food expiration dates\r\non grocery store tags.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nToo bad they didn&#8217;t test picking political candidates to elect.\r\nApparently at least a minority of U.S. adults failed that, too.\r\nI would quote from the actual test, but this is what we find\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/surveys\/piaac\/\">\r\nat ncs.ed.gov<\/a> today:<!--more-->\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nDear Users,\r\n<p>\r\nDue to a lapse of appropriations and the partial shutdown of the Federal Government, the systems that host nces.ed.gov have been shut down. It measures the key\r\ncognitive and workplace skills needed for individuals to participate\r\nin society and for economies to prosper.\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/site\/piaac\/#d.en.221854\">\r\nThe first results from the Survey were released on 8th October 2013.<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe evidence from this Survey will help countries better understand\r\nhow education and training systems can nurture these skills.\r\nEducators, policy makers and labour economists will use this\r\ninformation to develop economic, education and social policies that\r\nwill continue to enhance the skills of adults.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nHere&#8217;s\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/site\/piaac\/Skills%20volume%201%20%28eng%29--full%20v8--eBook%20%2801%2010%202013%29.pdf\">\r\nthe actual report<\/a>,\r\nplus\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/XvCLXPDvPCM\">OECD video<\/a>:\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XvCLXPDvPCM?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n<blockquote>\r\nLife skills, such as communicating and meeting deadlines,\r\nare as important as diplomas and qualifications in the workplace.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nToo bad nobody would fund the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2010\/01\/chance-changing-homes-and-neighborhoods-challenging-everyone.html\">\r\nCHANCE program<\/a>\r\nthat was about exactly that.\r\n<p>\r\nThis adult failure affects the future of younger Americans, too.\r\nBack to the AP story:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nNot only did Americans score poorly compared to many international\r\ncompetitors, the findings reinforced just how large the gap is\r\nbetween the nation&#8217;s high- and low-skilled workers and how hard it\r\nis to move ahead when your parents haven&#8217;t.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nIn both reading and math, for example, those with college-educated\r\nparents did better than those whose parents did not complete high\r\nschool.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThe winners?\r\nFinland and Japan.\r\nYou remember Finland, also\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/08\/why-is-finland-at-the-top-of-the-world-in-education.html\">\r\nat the top of the world in education<\/a>\r\nwhere educators make education decisions and get paid like doctors and lawyers,\r\nwhere\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/there-are-no-private-schools-in-finland-the-opposite-of-atlanta-imposed-charter-schools.html\">\r\nthere are no private schools<\/a>,\r\nand\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/there-are-no-private-schools-in-finland-the-opposite-of-atlanta-imposed-charter-schools.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:170px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017744424ba3970d-pi.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n&ldquo;Real winners do not compete.&rdquo;\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThis is what Finnish schools do:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nSince the 1980s, the main driver of Finnish education policy has\r\nbeen the idea that every child should have exactly the same\r\nopportunity to learn, regardless of family background, income, or\r\ngeographic location. Education has been seen first and foremost not\r\nas a way to produce star performers, but as an instrument to even\r\nout social inequality.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/04\/they-come-to-school-hungry-they-come-to-school-homeless-bill-cason-joint-governments-2012-03-29.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b016304430073970d-pi.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/04\/they-come-to-school-hungry-they-come-to-school-homeless-bill-cason-joint-governments-2012-03-29.html\">\r\nMeanwhile in Valdosta<\/a>:\r\n<blockquote>\r\nThey come to school hungry; they come to school homeless. \r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nHow about we change that?\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nDon&#8217;t say it can&#8217;t be done.\r\nKorea is among\r\n<blockquote>\r\nThree lowest performers among 55-65 years old\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nYet\r\n<blockquote><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/10188589326\/sizes\/z\/\" title=\"Korea\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5540\/10188589326_5e23ce95c6_n.jpg\" alt=\"Korea\"><\/a>\r\nSecond [only] to Japan among 16-24 years olds\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nAnd\r\n<blockquote>\r\nYoung Koreans better at reading and maths than Italian university graduates\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nSimilarly, in Finland, older people are average, while younger Finns\r\nare among the best worldwide.\r\n<p>\r\nI think any employer around here can attest that many U.S. college graduates\r\nread at about 8th grade levels.\r\nBut it doesn&#8217;t have to be that way.\r\nKorea and Finland did it, and we can do it.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/general-broadband-adoption-improves-rural-economic-health.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7460\/10036049634_eea6172e4e_n.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nNot coincidentally, Finland (like Japan) is also\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.peerflow.net\/2007\/08\/broadband-speed.html\">\r\namong world leaders in Internet speed<\/a> and uptake.\r\nIf we want better education and a better economy, maybe we should\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/general-broadband-adoption-improves-rural-economic-health.html\">\r\nget more people here using fast affordable Internet access<\/a>.\r\nAll that and possibly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/broadband-fiber-correlates-with-increased-house-prices.html\">\r\nincreased house prices<\/a>, too.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Then adults fail to provide sufficient education for U.S. children to succeed in an educated world.
