\r\nThen adults fail to provide sufficient education for U.S. children\r\nto succeed in an educated world.\r\nBut we can change that.\r\nKorea and Finland did, and we can, too.\r\n

\r\nKimberly Hefling wrote for AP Tuesday,\r\n\r\nAmerican adults score poorly on global test<\/a>,\r\n

\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"U.S.\"<\/a>\r\nIn math, reading and problem-solving using technology—all\r\nskills considered critical for global competitiveness and economic\r\nstrength—American adults scored below the international\r\naverage on a global test, according to results released Tuesday.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nAdults in Japan, Canada, Australia, Finland and multiple other\r\ncountries scored significantly higher than the United States in all\r\nthree areas on the test. Beyond basic reading and math, respondents\r\nwere tested on activities such as calculating mileage reimbursement\r\ndue to a salesman, sorting email and comparing food expiration dates\r\non grocery store tags.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nToo bad they didn’t test picking political candidates to elect.\r\nApparently at least a minority of U.S. adults failed that, too.\r\nI would quote from the actual test, but this is what we find\r\n\r\nat ncs.ed.gov<\/a> today:\r\n

\r\nDue to a lapse of appropriations and the partial shutdown of the Federal Government, the systems that host nces.ed.gov have been shut down. Services will be restored as soon as a continuing resolution to provide funding has been enacted.\r\n

\r\nAh, that’s just the U.S. participant in the survey.\r\nThe OECD actually did the international survey:\r\n\r\nAbout the Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC)<\/a>,\r\n

\r\n

\r\nThe Survey of Adult Skills is an international survey conducted in\r\n33 countries as part of the Programme for the International\r\nAssessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). It measures the key\r\ncognitive and workplace skills needed for individuals to participate\r\nin society and for economies to prosper.\r\n\r\nThe first results from the Survey were released on 8th October 2013.<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe evidence from this Survey will help countries better understand\r\nhow education and training systems can nurture these skills.\r\nEducators, policy makers and labour economists will use this\r\ninformation to develop economic, education and social policies that\r\nwill continue to enhance the skills of adults.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
