Even before\r\nFukushima, it wasn&#8217;t happening. The reason basically had to do with\r\ncost. Environmentalists helped shut down nuclear power, but really\r\nit was Wall Street that pulled the plug on it. It&#8217;s too expensive.\r\nIt&#8217;s like burning $20 bills to generate electricity. It requires, if\r\nyou&#8217;re going to do it, massive government subsidy. If you&#8217;re going\r\nto apply that subsidy, you&#8217;re better off doing it with other things\r\nthat will generate more kilowatt hours per buck.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nNow, that said, we should keep trying to figure out if there are\r\nsome ways to do it that are more acceptable than the ones we&#8217;ve got\r\nnow. You read about developments on the fringes, Thorium reactors\r\nand so on and so forth. But my guess is that in the timeframe we&#8217;ve\r\ngot this is not going to be the place we go.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nKevin J. Kelley wrote for Seven Days 10 August 2011,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.7dvt.com\/2011author-activist-bill-mckibben-gets-disobedient-about-climate-change\">\r\nAuthor-Activist Bill McKibben Gets &#8220;Disobedient&#8221; About Climate Change<\/a>,<!--more-->\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/08\/entergy-shutting-down-vermont-yankee-nuke-tenth-down-or-never-to-be-built-in-past-year.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d40fe9ce6970c-pi.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nShutting down Vermont Yankee, according to McKibben, was &ldquo;the\r\neasiest case there ever was to make.&rdquo; Noting it took a\r\n&ldquo;30-foot wall of water&rdquo; to damage the Fukushima nuclear\r\nplant in Japan, McKibben recalls that the side of a cooling tower at\r\nYankee &ldquo;just fell off&rdquo; a few years ago. Entergy, the\r\nowner of the Vernon plant, &ldquo;shouldn&#8217;t be allowed to run even a\r\nchain of convenience stores,&rdquo; McKibben charges.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/theenergycollective.com\/matthewnisbet\/196506\/natures-profit-bill-mckibben-journalist-public-intellectual-and-activist\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:341px\" src=\"http:\/\/climateshiftproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Bill_McKibben_at_Stop_the_Keystone_XL_pipeline_rally-1024x685.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nThe trend in energy generation, he observes, is &ldquo;away from few\r\nand big and toward many and small.&rdquo; He&#8217;s all for wind power,\r\nfor example, despite the opposition of some Vermont greens to\r\nridgeline installations. &ldquo;Every kind of energy has\r\ndrawbacks,&rdquo; McKibben acknowledges. &ldquo;In general, the\r\nbenefit of the doubt belongs to renewable energy.&rdquo;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Nukes cost too much and are too centralized; sun and wind are the power we need and can afford.
