Noll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Received today on <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/plant-vogtle-water-use.html\"> Plant Vogtle water use<\/a>. -jsq<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Energy projects such as <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/austin-energys-biomass-buyers-remorse.html\"> biomass plants<\/a>, coal firing plants, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/clean_energy\/our-energy-choices\/energy-and-water-use\/freshwater-use-by-us-power-plants.html\"> <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b01774405658f970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b01774405658f970d-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a> nuclear power plants waste enormous amounts of water. The once proposed 40MW biomass plant in Valdosta would have consumed 800,000 gallons of water DAILY. Considering that for years now we are experiencing record drought conditions and heat waves in the US, this should make everyone&#8217;s hair stand up on the back of their necks. (For more information see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/assets\/documents\/clean_energy\/ew3\/ew3-freshwater-use-by-us-power-plants.pdf\"> &#8220;Electricity&#8217;s Thirst on a Precious Resource&#8221;<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Add to this scenario a recent decision by the US Nuclear Regulatory\n\n<!--more-->\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bredl.org\/nuclear\/\"> <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017744056592970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017744056592970d-pi.jpg\"   width=\"50%\"  \/><\/a> Commission (NRC) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/2012\/08\/07\/4702489\/nrc-freezes-all-nuclear-reactor.html#storylink=cpy\"> to freeze all nuclear reactor construction and operating licenses<\/a> in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Why? As the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BREDL) <a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/biomass-plant-land-offer-industrial-authority-board-meets-this-morning.html\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017744056597970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017744056597970d-pi.jpg\"   width=\"288\" height=\"186\"  \/><\/a> summarized: &#8220;The Court noted that, after decades of failure to site a repository, including twenty years of working on the now-abandoned Yucca Mountain repository, the NRC has no long-term plan other than hoping for a geologic repository. Therefore it is possible that spent fuel will be stored at reactor sites *on a permanent basis*. Under the circumstances, the NRC must examine the environmental consequences of failing to establish a repository when one is needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That begs the question what will happen with the radioactive waste\nthat is accumulating here in Georgia and in connection with plants like Vogtle, Hatch, and others?<\/p>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/dancing-around-the-issue-dr-noll.html\"> <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b0177440565a2970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b0177440565a2970d-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\n<p>Thankfully some people and institutions are finally seeing the  writing on the wall.
