{"id":5808,"date":"2013-09-30T10:11:33","date_gmt":"2013-09-30T14:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?p=5808"},"modified":"2013-09-30T10:16:34","modified_gmt":"2013-09-30T14:16:34","slug":"florida-power-and-light-selected-sabal-trail-for-pipeline-through-georgia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/florida-power-and-light-selected-sabal-trail-for-pipeline-through-georgia.html","title":{"rendered":"Florida Power and Light selected Sabal Trail for pipeline through Georgia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\nA Florida company selected a Texas company\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/vdt-starts-to-catch-up-about-pipeline.html\">that can use eminent domain in Georgia<\/a>\r\nto take your land.\r\nDoes that seem right to you?\r\nFlorida PSC has to review this pipeline.\r\nWhere&#8217;s Georgia PSC on this?\r\n<p>\r\nFPL PR 26 July 2013,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fpl.com\/news\/2013\/072613_1.shtml\">\r\nFPL selects Sabal Trail Transmission and Florida Southeast Connection to build new natural gas pipeline system into Florida<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fpl.com\/news\/2013\/072613_1.shtml\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fpl.com\/fplcommon\/wrapper\/1024images\/w_topLogo.gif\"><\/a>\r\nFlorida Power &#038; Light Company today announced that its evaluation of\r\nproposals for additional natural gas transportation capacity\r\ndetermined that the best, most economical solution for ensuring\r\nFlorida&#8217;s continued access to the clean, affordable, U.S.-produced\r\nfuel necessary to meet the growing electricity needs of the state&#8217;s\r\nresidents and businesses is a combination of a natural gas pipeline\r\nand interconnection hub to be built by Sabal Trail Transmission,\r\nLLC, and a second natural gas pipeline to be built by Florida\r\nSoutheast Connection, LLC&#8230;.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nBoth Sabal Trail and Florida Southeast Connection will be interstate\r\nnatural gas pipelines subject to Federal Energy Regulatory\r\nCommission approval and oversight.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nIn conjunction with today&#8217;s public announcement, FPL filed a\r\npetition for prudence review with the Florida Public Service\r\nCommission (PSC). Subject to PSC approval,<!--more--> FPL&#8217;s cost of using the\r\nnew pipelines to deliver natural gas for its power plants will be\r\nfactored into the fuel charge on customer bills beginning in 2017,\r\nconsistent with how the company&#8217;s costs of using the two existing\r\npipeline systems are recovered.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<H4>Sabal Trail<\/H4>\r\n<p>\r\nThe Sabal Trail project will include approximately 465 miles of\r\ninterstate natural gas pipeline (55 miles in Alabama, 196 miles in\r\nGeorgia and 214 miles in Florida). The Sabal Trail pipeline will be\r\ncapable of transporting more than 1 billion cubic feet per day of\r\nnatural gas to serve local distribution companies, industrial users\r\nand natural gas-fired power generators in the Southeast.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nFollowing FPL&#8217;s selection of Sabal Trail through the RFP evaluation\r\nprocess, a NextEra Energy subsidiary agreed to invest approximately\r\n$1 billion of the system&#8217;s projected cost of roughly $3 billion upon\r\nspecified terms. NextEra Energy was provided the option to invest\r\nwith Spectra Energy in order to facilitate on-time construction and\r\nenhance availability of financing for the pipeline project.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;We are very pleased to partner with NextEra in providing the\r\ncritical natural gas infrastructure needed to help meet Florida&#8217;s\r\ngrowing electricity demand,&rdquo; said Bill Yardley, president of\r\nU.S. transmission and storage for Spectra Energy Corp. &ldquo;This\r\nproject will also make additional natural gas supplies and new\r\nenergy infrastructure available to power generators across Florida,\r\nthus increasing the energy diversity, security and reliability\r\nacross the state.&rdquo;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nReally?\r\nSolar power would have provided more energy diversity, security,\r\nand reliabiity for Florida.\r\nAnd this pipeline provides nothing for Georgia.\r\n<p>\r\nFPL didn&#8217;t ask for new energy; it only asked for natural gas:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nIn December 2012, FPL issued a request for proposals (RFP) for new\r\nnatural gas transportation\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd Georgians get to pay for savings to FPL:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nFPL&#8217;s economic analysis showed that these projects will save FPL\r\ncustomers nearly $600 million compared with the next closest\r\nproposal.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nHow about we say no to this pipeline?\r\nAnd yes to solar power in south Georgia.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Florida company selected a Texas company that can use eminent domain in Georgia to take your land.
