{"id":5714,"date":"2013-09-22T16:43:18","date_gmt":"2013-09-22T20:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?p=5714"},"modified":"2013-09-22T16:48:13","modified_gmt":"2013-09-22T20:48:13","slug":"pipeline-concerns-about-flint-river-and-floridan-aquifer-heard-by-dougherty-county-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/pipeline-concerns-about-flint-river-and-floridan-aquifer-heard-by-dougherty-county-commission.html","title":{"rendered":"Pipeline concerns about Flint River and Floridan Aquifer heard by Dougherty County Commission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nSomeone reminded her County Commission they can do something about the<br \/>\npipeline, only a few counties from here.<br \/>\nAt least one county commissioner there gets it that<br \/>\n&ldquo;it&#8217;s clearly not just a local issue.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s a Southeast issue.&rdquo;<br \/>\nAnd the pipeline company has now promised public hearings in that county.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.albany.ga.us\/content\/1800\/2883\/121021.aspx\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.albany.ga.us\/images\/sept%202013%20jeff%20015.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nDougherty County Chairman Jeff Sinyard<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/pipeline-opposition-growing.html\"><br \/>\nfollowed up within a few days on his promise to do something<\/a>.<br \/>\nCarlton Fletcher wrote for AlbanyHerald.com 9 September 2013,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.albanyherald.com\/news\/2013\/sep\/09\/county-commission-hears-concerns-about-pipeline\/\"><br \/>\nCounty Commission hears concerns about pipeline<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nDinorah Hall told commissioners at their business session that the<br \/>\nproposed $3 billion pipeline would pose danger to the environment<br \/>\nand to residents in the path of the 465-mile project.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;It is within your authority to advocate citizens&#8217; safety<br \/>\nfirst by proposing an alternate site for the large, industrial<br \/>\ncompression station that will be used to push the gas through the<br \/>\npipeline and an alternate route away from more heavily populated<br \/>\nareas,&rdquo; Hall said. &ldquo;Just imagine the catastrophic impact<br \/>\na pipeline disaster could have on our natural resources such as the<br \/>\nFlint River and our underground aquifer.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nCommission Chairman Jeff Sinyard encouraged Hall and other impacted<br \/>\nlandowners to attend the commission&#8217;s work session Monday to discuss<br \/>\ntheir concerns with project representatives.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;It is very, very important that they meet every legal and<br \/>\nenvironmental requirement on this project,&rdquo; Sinyard said of<br \/>\nHouston-based Spectra Energy Corp., which is building the pipeline<br \/>\nto supply gas to Florida Power &#038; Light. &ldquo;We expect them to use<br \/>\nprofessional, non-bullying dialogue when talking with our citizens,<br \/>\nand we&#8217;re going to do everything we can to see that this project<br \/>\nnegatively impacts the least number of citizens.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nLocal residents are still just NIMBY, but District 4 Commissioner Ewell Lyle<br \/>\nsaid,<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.albany.ga.us\/content\/1800\/2883\/121011.aspx\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.albany.ga.us\/images\/sept%202013%20ewell%20008.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\n&ldquo;If there&#8217;s ever been an issue this commission should endorse,<br \/>\nthis (monitoring the pipeline) is it. It&#8217;s supposed to go through a<br \/>\nlarge part of our county, and with 1 billion cubic feet of natural<br \/>\ngas going through it every day, it&#8217;s clearly not just a local issue.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s a Southeast issue.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nWhy are we wasting Georgia&#8217;s land and risking Georgia&#8217;s rivers and<br \/>\ndrinking water on a project to benefit Florida<br \/>\nwhen we could be installing solar panels that would help everyone in<br \/>\nthe southeast?<\/p>\n<p>\nHere&#8217;s something else to monitor:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nSinyard said that in addition to meeting with the County Commission<br \/>\nnext week to discuss the pipeline project, Sabal Trail officials<br \/>\nwould hold public hearings for stakeholders starting in early<br \/>\nOctober.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nWill those ever happen?<br \/>\nAnd would they ever have even been promised without the local county commission<br \/>\ngetting involved?<\/p>\n<p>\nWhere&#8217;s the Lowndes County Commission on this?<br \/>\nOh, right:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/lowndes-county-takes-no-responsibility-for-the-pipeline-bill-slaughter-lcc-2013-06-25.html\"><br \/>\nChairman Bill Slaughter said the Commission takes no responsibility<\/a><br \/>\nfor the pipeline.<br \/>\nAnd<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/sabal-trail-natural-gas-pipeline-letters-to-lowndes-county.html\"><br \/>\nno letters from the county to Sabal Trail were returned<\/a> in response<br \/>\nto an open records request.<br \/>\nMaybe our elected commissioners could at least try to represent us.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n -jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Someone reminded her County Commission they can do something about the pipeline, only a few counties from here.
