<\/a>\r\nDougherty County Chairman Jeff Sinyard\r\n\r\nfollowed up within a few days on his promise to do something<\/a>.\r\nCarlton Fletcher wrote for AlbanyHerald.com 9 September 2013,\r\n\r\nCounty Commission hears concerns about pipeline<\/a>,\r\n\r\n\r\nDinorah Hall told commissioners at their business session that the\r\nproposed $3 billion pipeline would pose danger to the environment\r\nand to residents in the path of the 465-mile project.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\n“It is within your authority to advocate citizens’ safety\r\nfirst by proposing an alternate site for the large, industrial\r\ncompression station that will be used to push the gas through the\r\npipeline and an alternate route away from more heavily populated\r\nareas,” Hall said. “Just imagine the catastrophic impact\r\na pipeline disaster could have on our natural resources such as the\r\nFlint River and our underground aquifer.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nCommission Chairman Jeff Sinyard encouraged Hall and other impacted\r\nlandowners to attend the commission’s work session Monday to discuss\r\ntheir concerns with project representatives.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\n“It is very, very important that they meet every legal and\r\nenvironmental requirement on this project,” Sinyard said of\r\nHouston-based Spectra Energy Corp., which is building the pipeline\r\nto supply gas to Florida Power & Light. “We expect them to use\r\nprofessional, non-bullying dialogue when talking with our citizens,\r\nand we’re going to do everything we can to see that this project\r\nnegatively impacts the least number of citizens.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
\r\nLocal residents are still just NIMBY, but District 4 Commissioner Ewell Lyle\r\nsaid,\r\n
\r\n\r\n\r\n
<\/a>\r\n“If there’s ever been an issue this commission should endorse,\r\nthis (monitoring the pipeline) is it. It’s supposed to go through a\r\nlarge part of our county, and with 1 billion cubic feet of natural\r\ngas going through it every day, it’s clearly not just a local issue.\r\nIt’s a Southeast issue.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
\r\nWhy are we wasting Georgia’s land and risking Georgia’s rivers and\r\ndrinking water on a project to benefit Florida\r\nwhen we could be installing solar panels that would help everyone in\r\nthe southeast?\r\n
\r\nHere’s something else to monitor:\r\n
\r\n\r\nSinyard said that in addition to meeting with the County Commission\r\nnext week to discuss the pipeline project, Sabal Trail officials\r\nwould hold public hearings for stakeholders starting in early\r\nOctober.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
\r\nWill those ever happen?\r\nAnd would they ever have even been promised without the local county commission\r\ngetting involved?\r\n
\r\nWhere’s the Lowndes County Commission on this?\r\nOh, right:\r\n\r\nChairman Bill Slaughter said the Commission takes no responsibility<\/a>\r\nfor the pipeline.\r\nAnd\r\n\r\nno letters from the county to Sabal Trail were returned<\/a> in response\r\nto an open records request.\r\nMaybe our elected commissioners could at least try to represent us.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
