<\/a>\r\nRather, the means of holding a member responsible for bad judgments\r\nare internalized as part of the rules and discipline governing the\r\nhierarchy to which they belong, with mechanisms for outsiders to\r\nassert responsibility — to assert rights — being\r\nminimized and neutralized whenever possible.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
\r\nSure, it’s not exactly the same.\r\nOur local governments live in fear they’ll get sued (or so they claim),\r\nand even sheriffs and judges occasionally get convicted around here.\r\nBut it’s quite difficult to get local elected officials to take their responsibility to the\r\npeople as seriously as “we’ve invested too much in that to stop now”\r\nwhere “we” means the local government or more frequently a developer.\r\n
\r\nAnd privatizing the landfills and\r\n\r\nnow trash collection<\/a> is not that\r\ndissimilar to the Japanese government keeping TEPCO afloat so they\r\nhave an unaccountable scapegoat for Fukushima.\r\nLocally, nobody seems to even know, much less care, that the landfill\r\nis\r\n\r\nin an aquifer recharge zone<\/a>\r\nand has accepted\r\n\r\nPCBs<\/a>,\r\n\r\ncoal ash<\/a>,\r\nand\r\n\r\n
<\/a>\r\n\r\nwastewater from the Seven Out Superfund site<\/a> in Waycross,\r\nplus ADS now wants\r\n\r\nto cut through the riparian buffer to cross a branch<\/a>\r\ninto the Withlacoochee River.\r\n
\r\nIs the local landfill equivalent to radiation-leaking Fukushima?\r\nNot even close.\r\nBut the pattern of avoiding responsibility does seem similar.\r\nMaybe it’s time for us like Japan to realize:\r\n
\r\n\r\nJapan is supposedly a democracy, so in theory a\r\nresponsibility-shirking government is ultimately the people’s\r\nproblem — and responsibility — just as much as the\r\nnuclear disaster and all the nation’s other problems are. Of course,\r\nthe people have a plentiful supply of other targets to blame until\r\nenough of them come to that realization.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
\r\nWe could use\r\n\r\nbetter than trash government<\/a>.\r\nThere are elections\r\n\r\nfor city governments this year<\/a>\r\nand for the county next year.\r\n
