\r\nAs prison populations surge in the UK, with overcrowded cells and\r\nrepeat offenders, the opposite in happening in the Netherlands.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe country is actually to close eight prisons because of a lack of\r\ncriminals, the Dutch justice ministry has announced.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nDeclining crime rates in the Netherlands mean that although the\r\ncountry has the capacity for 14,000 prisoners, there are only 12,000\r\ndetainees, reported the nrc.nl.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe decrease is expected to continue, the ministry said, with Deputy\r\njustice minister Nebahat Albayrak saying that natural redundancy and\r\nother measures should counter any forced lay-offs.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
