\r\nGBI finally released video of prisoners being beaten with hammers by guards\r\nafter the\r\n\r\n2010 prisoner strikes<\/a>\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nfor wages\r\ninstead of working for free for things like\r\n\r\ncall centers and building weapons<\/a>.\r\nTwo guards\r\n\r\npled guilty in 2012<\/a>\r\nto conspiracy, assault with injury, and coverup.\r\nBut GBI mysteriously hasn’t been able to identify\r\nthe guard seen in this video beating handcuffed prisoner Kelvin Stevenson\r\nwith a hammer.\r\n

\r\nAt the beginning of this video, you hear a prison guard shouting,\r\n“”Get down! Just get down! Get down! Get down!”\r\npresumably to the other prisoners. That exclamation is followed by,\r\n“Oh (inaudible) guy over there with his hands hitting him …\r\nand a damn hammer!”\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe deplorable beatings you’re witnessing occurred on New Year’s\r\nEve, just before midnight, on Dec. 31, 2010. It’s taken two years\r\nand nearly eight months for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to\r\nrelease this video. A very persistent family member of one of the\r\nvictims finally persuaded them to give it to her, and Rev. Kenneth\r\nGlasgow, a strong advocate for justice for prisoners, posted it to\r\nYouTube for the world to see.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe family member who retrieved the video describes it as\r\n“Georgia inmates being beaten with a hammer-like object while\r\nhandcuffed,” and she adds: “The Georgia Department of\r\nCorrections denies this happened but were caught on tape. The\r\nofficer responsible was never arrested or reprimanded. The district\r\nattorney had the video and never sought charges.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“The family is demanding justice for this barbaric, inhumane\r\nact. \r\n“If you look closely, you will see a very large man lying on\r\ntop of Kelvin Stevenson as the other guard batters his head with the\r\nhammer. Eye witnesses state that Stevenson was also handcuffed at\r\nthe time.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nAnd remember, private prisons such as those run by CCA\r\nare even less accountable.\r\n

\r\nIt’s time to end the failed War on Drugs and ramp down the seven-fold\r\nswelled prison system in the U.S.\r\n
