\nIt’s not just\n\nVLCIA’s Community Assessment<\/a> that argues for\na public transportation system in Valdosta-Lowndes County.\nGetting people\n\nto work without requiring cars<\/a> is an even\nbigger problem in larger metropolitan areas, but many of the\nissues are the same here.\n<\/p>\n

\nTo truly get America back to work, we have to focus on more than\n\n<\/a>\n\njobs, jobs, jobs.<\/a> It is about integrating jobs, transportation,\nhousing and community services in ways that work equally well for\nlower- and upper-income families.\n<\/p>\n

\nVibrant communities where residents can walk to shops, restaurants,\ngrocery stores and community services; and where public\ntransportation provides convenient connections between home and work\ncan be built. Planning community development with public\ntransportation as a central consideration \u2014 transit-oriented\ndevelopment or TOD \u2014 can spur economic growth, sometimes\ndramatically. But that approach has not been systematically applied\nto communities of all income levels.\n<\/p>\n

\nFor these reasons, it is important for government, public transit\nagencies, nonprofits, foundations and the private sector to come\ntogether so that thriving communities for families of all economic\nlevels can be created.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nIt’s a safety issue, too.\nFar more Americans die in traffic accidents than in foreign wars,\n\nand widening roads farther out just makes the problem worse.<\/a>\nCurrently, Lowndes County \nsays that’s not pertinent.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nMaybe we should change that.\n\n<\/a>\nWhat if we built\n\ncommunities, not cul-de-sacs?<\/a>\n<\/p>\n
