Planning community development with public\ntransportation as a central consideration \u2014 transit-oriented\ndevelopment or TOD \u2014 can spur economic growth, sometimes\ndramatically. But that approach has not been systematically applied\nto communities of all income levels.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nFor these reasons, it is important for government, public transit\nagencies, nonprofits, foundations and the private sector to come\ntogether so that thriving communities for families of all economic\nlevels can be created.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/08\/suburbia-dangerous-for-pedestrians.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017c316b1519970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c316b1519970b-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\nIt&#8217;s a safety issue, too.\nFar more Americans die in traffic accidents than in foreign wars,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/08\/suburbia-dangerous-for-pedestrians.html\">\nand widening roads farther out just makes the problem worse.<\/a>\nCurrently, Lowndes County <a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/08\/why-should-traffic-safety-not-be-a-pertinent-fact.html\">\nsays that&#8217;s not pertinent.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nMaybe we should change that.\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/09\/communities-not-cul-de-sacs.html\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017c316b151c970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c316b151c970b-pi.jpg\"   width=\"200\" height=\"150\"  \/><\/a>\nWhat if we built\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/09\/communities-not-cul-de-sacs.html\">\ncommunities, not cul-de-sacs?<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s not just VLCIA&#8217;s Community Assessment that argues for a public transportation system in Valdosta-Lowndes County.
