{"id":5500,"date":"2013-09-01T15:10:19","date_gmt":"2013-09-01T19:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?p=5500"},"modified":"2013-09-01T15:11:11","modified_gmt":"2013-09-01T19:11:11","slug":"not-spots-of-internet-coverage-in-the-u-k","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/not-spots-of-internet-coverage-in-the-u-k.html","title":{"rendered":"Not spots of Internet coverage in the U.K."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\nDoes any of this sound familiar?\r\n<p>\r\nJonathan Blake wrote for BBC 30 August 2013,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsbeat\/23894819\">\r\nCampaigners challenge countryside mobile coverage plan<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsbeat\/23894819\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:232px\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/69554000\/jpg\/_69554010_photo2.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nLast month details were given about which so-called &#8220;not spots&#8221;\r\nwould benefit from the \u00a3150m Mobile Infrastructure Plan.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe Countryside Alliance has said that it thinks the approach is\r\n&#8220;not good enough&#8221;.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nUnder the plan, Vodafone, EE, O2 and Three will operate equipment\r\npaid for by government funds.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;It&#8217;s brilliant that they&#8217;re doing it,&#8221; said Charlotte Cooper from\r\nthe Countryside Alliance.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;[But] we&#8217;re a little bit concerned <!--more-->that they seem to have rolled\r\nback on what they said they were going to do.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;Originally it was going to be 92% of the 70,000 premises across the\r\ncountry with no signal. Now it&#8217;s only 75% at best. We don&#8217;t think\r\nthat&#8217;s good enough.&#8221;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThey&#8217;re specifically talking about wireless telephone coverage, but:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nO2 highlighted its TuGo app as something it is doing to help\r\n&#8220;customers in areas that may not have coverage&#8221;.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe service lets users make and receive calls, send texts and access\r\nvoicemail using a wi-fi connection.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd if you&#8217;ve got that wi-fi connection you can also do lots of other\r\nthings on the Internet.\r\nAnd if the phone coverage is 4G LTE, ditto.\r\n<p>\r\nOf course a big difference is at least the U.K. government is trying\r\nto cover U.K. not spots, which is more than our local governments\r\nseem to be doing.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Does any of this sound familiar?
